One of my favourite things about living with dogs, is getting to watch each of them grow and develop into their own individuals.

I will never subscribe to a way of life overburdened by arbitrary rules and ideologies routed in pseudoscience.

Dogs are sentient beings with unique personalities, likes, dislikes and most importantly - a biological need to be a dog.

So often, ā€œtrainingā€ promotes removing all the traits from your dog that make them a dog.

And look, that doesn’t mean you can’t train the behaviours you need. We just have to find a balance between what you need and what your dog needs - and in my experience those things don’t actually conflict. Because a happy, fulfilled dog, is going to be a ā€œwell behavedā€ dog.

Tell me below what your favourite thing is about your dog (even if other people think it’s ā€œnaughtyā€)

It can also be really helpful to learn more about body language so you can tell what you’re looking at when it comes to looking vs fixation.

Is my dog’s body language soft and relaxed or are they tense and leaning forward?

Call me a killjoy, but we need to get better at knowing what we’re seeing when it comes to animal welfare.

The fact that we reward and celebrate videos for just involving a dog, without looking at the reality of how those dogs are being treated is really upsetting. It continues to reinforce and reward people for treating their animals badly and encourages other people to do the same.

If your dog stops, drops, or refuses to move when you pass another dog, this is a really good early warning sign for reactivity.

And the great thing is, if you catch it early, you can put in the right measures to set your dog up for a happy, reactivity free future!

I’m Amelia and I’ve spent the last 6 years helping the more ā€œdifficultā€ dogs. In home environments, rescues and even overseas shelters. If there’s a dog that’s struggling with pulling on leash, ignoring people, biting, jumping up, barking etc. then I’m the person that gets called.

But I believe that every dog deserves kindness and love and I’ve seen first hand that the dogs who struggle the most are the most in need of a gentle approach.

So if you’re the kind of person that’s always being told you ā€œspoilā€ your dog and you know you need help, but you don’t want harsh methods that might ruin your relationship, then you’re definitely in the right place!

I’m not a woman but as someone that was socialised as a woman I wanted to jump on this and share my story.

Because the narrative that the only useful or worthwhile thing you could do in life is have children, is sooo harmful for so many reasons. But thankfully I’ve come far enough in my journey to speak about it from a place of safety and security.

I have never wanted and will never want children but when I was in my early to mid 20s I felt like there was a societal ticking, counting down to 30. I felt that as I grew older my value would fade and that I felt like years were ticking down to the day I’d have to have kids.

I would lie awake at night filled with dread. I felt like I was in a lose lose situation - I’d either not have kids and be seen as pointless by society or I’d give in to the pressure and end up hating my life. It made me unbelievably depressed.

So after leaving a relationship a few years ago, I decided to fill my life with all things I wanted to do away from the pressures of heteronormative expectations. And I found so much joy and purpose in my life.

Over the years I’ve learnt to reject societies conditioning and no longer feel that looming sense of dread. I’m happy knowing that I won’t have children and my future feels fuller and brighter than ever.

So this year, when I did turn 30 I didn’t actually feel any of the things I thought I would 5 years ago. I felt free of those pressures, so full of love in my life and so excited to keep living ā™„ļø

I still have a ways to go in terms of unpacking all that conditioning we face, but I know things are moving in the right direction and I hope you’ll be here for that journey with me!

And of course before I finish - this is absolutely nothing against people who do want or have children. This is not a commentary on one lifestyle being better than another. I’m purely speaking about my own experience and feelings because I know there will be others who resonate with or need to hear this.

When I got my first dog over 8 years ago, I thought it was enough to do loads of training and loads of walks. I couldn’t understand why his behaviour kept getting worse when I was spending all my time working with him.

I’d be covered in bruises, my floors were ripped up and I kept saying ā€œmaybe he just needs moreā€. So I’d up his walks, do more enrichment, more training. But things kept getting worse.

I was so confused and I think I hit my tipping point when I burst into tears at the park in full view of all the other dog walkers 🫠

So I ended up going down a rabbit hole and became obsessed with dog behaviour. I learnt more than I could even try to put in this post. But the hardest lesson for me is that more ≠ happier dog.

So often we shame ourselves into doing more and more when what our dogs actually need is the RIGHT outlets and most importantly ✨Rest✨

After learning how dogs nervous systems actually worked, I realised that what I actually needed to do was teach him to regulate himself. We dropped his walks right down to 1 a day, focused on sniffing instead of fetch and stopped insisting on doing loads of training that he clearly wasn’t enjoying.

So now when I teach people how to live with their dogs, we ignore that old advice of just ā€œtrain moreā€ ā€œgive them more exerciseā€ and focus instead on outlets that are good for the individual, fulfil their needs and prioritise self regulation.
