A lot of trainers right now are copying concepts straight from human psychology and applying it to dogs like it’s gospel and look, there’s a similar crossover, of course there is but a huge chunk of the behavioural cases I see start with a dog being humanised. Treated like a small person instead of a dog with dog instincts, dog drives and a dog’s way of reading the world.
What works depends on the dog, the handler, the relationship, the environment. Different trainers have different skill sets, and pretending there’s a single “correct” way to train is dishonest.
What worries me more is the trend of using emotional language and guilt to push tools out of the conversation entirely. Framing certain equipment as cruel by default, rather than judging how it’s used. That’s not compassion, that’s playing devil’s advocate with dogs’ lives. Even if you take the tools away, behavioural issues don’t disappear. They get worse. When they get worse, more dogs end up surrendered or put down.
Training should always serve one thing: what’s genuinely best for the dog and the owner in front of you.

There’s a particular kind of quiet that only comes after the hard part.
Somewhere behind a moment like this is a dog who used to react and an owner who used to brace for it. Getting here takes a full mental switch , not just from the dog, but from the person on the other end of the lead.
There is no quick fix. It takes patience, consistency and working towards, calm again and again until it starts to feel normal.
Peaceful walks are possible. They just take time to get to.

Reactivity. Aggression. Car anxiety. Pulling on the lead. Different problems, same fix, time, consistency and a clear line of communication between dog and owner

Summer Programme, Week 1: Dog Detectives
This week our junior handlers are on a mission: spotting what dogs are really saying.
Grab the Traffic Light Guide and turn it into a bingo card for your family days out. Ears up or back? Tail loose and wagging, or tucked away? Bouncy and soft, or stiff as a board?
It’s part game, part superpower because once you know what to look for, you can’t unsee it.
🟢 Green = happy dog
🟡🔴 Yellow or red = stop, step back, get an adult
And a gentle reminder for the grown-ups too: a dog off having the time of its life with its owner or its pals doesn’t need us going over to say hello, however cute it is. Let sniffing dogs sniff, playing dogs play and admire from a distance!
Have fun out there, detectives!

Dogs and children can exist together safely but that takes guidance, not guesswork.
There are so many stories of attacks involving kids and they are a hard reminder of that most weren’t “bad dogs.” They were missed signals, gaps in supervision/ bad handling, dogs and children who were never really taught how to read each other.

As owners, understanding our dogs’ body language and staying present around children isn’t optional. As parents, helping kids learn that dogs communicate constantly, not in words but in their own way matters just as much.

That’s why we built our 6-week programme.

Prevention isn’t complicated. It just takes attention.

Following on from yesterday this is what the process should look like.

Going through some old photos and found these 💎
It’s a privilege to work with so many amazing dogs and the people behind them. Every owner trusted me with their best mate, and that’s never something I take lightly.
