I've been noticing more and more of the younger gen advertising dog walking services to earn a bit of extra pocket money.
I genuinely admire the initiative. It's lovely to see young people wanting to get out, be productive and earn their own money. But I do think there's an important conversation to be had about the risks involved.
Dog walking isn't as straight forward as it might seem. Insurance, handling different breeds and temperaments, recognising warning signs, and dealing with unexpected situations are all things that need serious consideration. Even the most well behaved dog can react unexpectedly, and the consequences can be frightening.
I've been dog walking for 17 years and I'm not trying to discourage young people from earning money, and I certainly don't want to take away from their enthusiasm. But I do think we need to recognise that when it comes to taking responsibility for somebody else's dog, good intentions alone aren't enough.
Please think carefully before offering or accepting dog walking services. There are real risks involved, and the safety of our dogs and ourselves must always come first. 🧡🐶
