🐾 Let’s talk about the daily dog walk. 🐾
I have been walking my dogs every single day for 13 years now. Rain, shine, snow, or heatwaves—we are out there, changing the day around to suit the dogs and my schedule. The only times we’ve ever missed a day is if I’ve been gravely ill. So when people say they "don’t have time" or it's "too hard to stay consistent," trust me: it is absolutely possible!
But let’s be completely honest for a second… after 13 years and thousands of miles, walking the same routes over and over can get incredibly boring. 🥱
If you’re feeling stuck in a dog-walking rut, your pup probably is too! Here are a few ways I keep our daily routine fresh, exciting, and fun for both of us:
🔄 Reverse your route: It sounds so simple, but just walking your usual loop backwards changes the entire perspective. The sights are different, the head-on winds are different, and it feels like a whole new path.
👃 Let them sniff (Let the dog steer!): We tend to rush to get the exercise in, but a "snifari" is a massive brain workout for your dog. Let them lead the way and stop at every single blade of grass if they want to. It slows you down and lets you just enjoy being outside.
🗺️ The Weekend Micro-Adventure: Pick one day a week to drive just 10 or 15 minutes away to a completely random park, trail, or neighborhood you’ve never explored. It breaks up the monotony of the Monday-to-Friday grind.
🎒 Turn it into a game: Bring a favorite toy or some high-value treats. Practice random sit/stays, change your walking pace suddenly, or weave through trees. Turning a walk into a training game keeps your dog focused on you and keeps your brain engaged.
🎧 Audiobooks & Podcasts: If my mind needs an escape while my feet are on autopilot, a gripping podcast or a good audiobook makes the time fly by. (Although not recommended with reactive dogs as you need eyes and ears everywhere!)
Thirteen years in, and my dogs still get that pure, unadulterated joy the second they hear the lead rattle. That enthusiasm is infectious—we just have to find ways to match their energy!
