🍂 FREE CUSHING’S (PPID) BLOOD TESTS UNTIL END OCTOBER

Could your horse or pony have PPID (Cushing’s disease)?

October is an ideal time to test, as the seasonal rise in ACTH makes this one of the most useful times of year for diagnosing PPID.

Through Boehringer Ingelheim’s Care About Cushing’s scheme, the laboratory fee for diagnostic ACTH blood testing is FREE throughout October.*

Look out for subtle signs such as loss of topline, lethargy, delayed coat shedding, increased drinking and urination, recurrent infections or laminitis.

🐴 BELL EQUINE at BVNA Congress! 💙

Kelly and Lauren represented BELL EQUINE at the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) Congress last weekend.

In between attending lectures and expanding their knowledge, they also spent time on the CVS nursing stand, helping to promote equine veterinary nursing and share their enthusiasm for the profession.

A special mention to Lauren, who has worked hard to develop the new CVS Practical Equine Nursing Companion, a valuable resource which is now available to support our nursing team in their everyday work.

👏 Well done to both for championing equine veterinary nursing!

Of course, horses never know it is the weekend, and whether you’re competing, riding, mucking out, feeding, caring for horses or working behind the scenes, there is always plenty to do!

💚 BE KIND : WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 💚

Caring for horses is hugely rewarding, but it can also be physically demanding, emotionally challenging and sometimes stressful.

Whether you’re a horse owner, rider, groom or veterinary professional, there are times when looking after horses can take its toll. Worrying about a sick or injured horse, making difficult decisions or simply juggling the demands of daily care can feel overwhelming.

At BELL EQUINE, we know how much horses mean to the people who care for them.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re reminding everyone to look after themselves as well as their horses. Check in on others, offer support and never underestimate the difference a little kindness can make.

Be kind to yourself, be kind to others! We’re all doing our best for the horses we love.💙🩺💙🐴

🌾 One week on from the Ploughing Match! 🐴

What a brilliant event! It was great catching up with our lovely clients and meeting new ones, and we had a fantastic day.
A big thank you to Hestevard, Equine America, Bova and Spillers for their generous prize donations, and to Grace from Saracens for joining us for the day!

Congratulations to Gemma, our first aid kit winner! 🎉 We also were hugely impressed by the answers to our quiz (it was not easy!) and "Pin the Organ" on the Horse! 😂

🍁 SYCAMORE POISONING: KNOW THE SIGNS

Autumn brings an increased risk of atypical myopathy, a serious condition caused when horses eat sycamore seeds containing the toxin hypoglycin A. The toxin can cause severe muscle damage, including damage to the muscles needed for breathing.
Signs to watch for include:
• Weakness or difficulty walking
• Muscle trembling
• A low head carriage or unusually dull appearance
• Signs resembling colic, sometimes despite a continued appetite
• Dark red or brown urine
• Difficulty standing or breathing
Atypical myopathy can be fatal. If you suspect it, call BELL EQUINE immediately on 01622 813700. Early veterinary treatment gives an affected horse the best chance.

To reduce the risk, check paddocks for sycamore seeds, especially after windy weather. Where possible, move horses away from affected grazing or fence off contaminated areas. Provide plenty of safe forage, particularly when grass is sparse. If you are on a livery yard and cannot change paddocks, speak to the yard owner about how exposure can be reduced, but we recommend limiting grazing, feeding hay or bringing horses at risk in for at least some of the day, if you can: more useful information below from the experts at Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance
Sycamore seedlings can also pose a risk in spring, so remain vigilant throughout the year.
