🎆🎇 Pet firework dont's - what to avoid 🎇🎆

The loud bangs and flashes of fireworks can be very frightening for our pets. To help reduce their stress and keep them safe, here is our advice on what not to do around our pets during firework season and the reasons why:

❌ Don't leave them alone (if possible):
A frightened pet may panic and hurt themselves or become destructive.
Having a familiar person around helps them feel safer.

❌ Don't leave them outdoors:
Never leave a dog tied up outside or let a dog/cat roam free.
A sudden loud bang can cause them to bolt, risking them getting lost or injured (This is the most common reason pets go missing during firework season).

❌ Don't take them to a display:
Even if your pet doesn't vocalise, the noise level is intense and can be extremely distressing.

❌ Don't force them out of a hiding place:
If your pet chooses to hide under the bed or behind the sofa, they are finding their "safe space."
Coaxing them out will only increase their stress and fear.

❌ Don't punish them:
Never tell your pet off for destructive behaviour or toileting indoors due to fear.
They are not being naughty; they are terrified.
Punishment only makes their anxiety worse.

❌ Don't act overly worried or react to the noise:
Your pet looks to you for signals. Try to remain calm and act normally, as if the noises are routine.
Overly fussing or panicking yourself can reinforce their belief that there is something to genuinely fear.

Our Dermatologist, Jamie Tapping (BSc MVDr MRCVS PGCert CertAVP) leads our referral dermatology clinics right here at Newnham Court Veterinary Hospital.

Working alongside your primary care Vet, Jamie digs deep into those complex, ongoing cases to get your pet the relief they deserve.

🩺 When you book a dermatology referral with Jamie, your pet receives a dedicated one-hour consultation, ensuring plenty of time for a comprehensive, stress-free assessment:

📋 From bathing routines and shampoo choices to exact diets, treats, and sleeping arrangements, every detail helps untangle complex allergies and irritations!

🔎 Including full physical and skin exams, in-house skin and ear cytology, tape impressions, and trichography (hair analysis).

🔬 Where needed, we offer video otoscopy, ear flushing, intradermal & blood allergy testing, skin biopsies, and CT imaging.
