Sometimes dog ownership isn’t all wagging tails and picture perfect walks.

Maybe you’re struggling with training.

Join us for a relaxed, judgement-free coffee morning where you can:

•Meet local dog owners
• Ask questions in a supportive environment
• Chat training, behaviour and nutrition
• Connect with people who just “get it”

No formal training.
No pressure.
No expectations.
Just good conversations, support and community.

Dogs are welcome, but there’s absolutely no pressure to bring them. In fact, if your dog would find the environment stressful, overwhelming, or simply wouldn’t enjoy it, feel free to come along on your own. This event is just as much about supporting the humans as it is the dogs 🧡

It really is alright to take a step back.

If something isn’t quite clicking, going back to a point where your dog feels successful or where you both feel more comfortable can help rebuild confidence for both of you.

It’s not a setback.

Sometimes a small step back is exactly what’s needed to help you both move forward.

Just remember you’re giving yourselves the best chance to succeed.

Behaviour is communication. Have I said that before 🤪.

Your dog’s not trying to wind you up. I promise.

They’re not plotting against you.
They’re not trying to embarrass you.
And they’re definitely not waking up each morning planning chaos (even though it really feels like it 🙈).

They’re just responding to how they feel, what they’ve already learned & what’s happening around them.

Sometimes that looks messy.
It feels bloody frustrating.
BUT it isn’t personal.

When we stop asking “How do I stop this?” and start asking “Why is this happening?” It helps us find the answers.

Because the behaviour isn’t the whole picture 🧡

I get it. And I see it ALOT.

Not because you’re not trying but probably there’s too much going on at once.

You’ve got a list in your head of things you’re trying to remember to do before you’ve even opened the door. And even then you’re not even sure you’ve got the list right.

You’re not getting it all wrong, you’re probably just feeling overwhelmed and like it all needs sorting right now.

That’s usually what makes it feel worse than it is 🧡

Public Service Announcement 📣

Your dog doesn’t need a tougher owner.

They need understanding, safety, and support.

Because learning under pressure might create compliance BUT it rarely creates confidence.

There are better ways to help dogs learn than making them worry about getting it wrong 🧡

More often than not I’m ‘trainer’ no.3 or sometimes even no.6.

People come to me who have already asked for help with their dogs before. But they’re still feeling stuck.

Not because they didn’t try but often because they’re left feeling unsupported or considered and then the plan never quite felt do-able in real life.

Recent conversations have really highlighted this for me. I will always consider what is achievable for you as an owner. And it’s part of the conversation we will keep revisiting.

Sleep quality is so often overlooked when our dogs are showing behaviours we’d prefer they didn’t.

Our dogs need so much more quality sleep than many people realise. Not just resting, proper sleep. The sleep where they’ve actually switched off, not half watching, half listening to everything going on around them.

And when they’re not getting enough things get harder.

They can struggle to settle.
They can react faster.
We call them naughty or stubborn.

So how much sleep do they really need? Here’s a quick ‘guideline’ (some will need more/less) reminder because it’s easy to underestimate…

Puppies : 18-20 hours a day
Adult dogs : 12-14 hours a day
Senior dogs : 14-18 hours a day

The chances are your dogs aren’t getting that amount of QUALITY sleep. Especially if you’re struggling with their behaviours, it’s never just training.

But… Choose one thing and start there.

Back home and reflecting on nearly a week of learning at Paignton zoo. Not everyone agrees with ‘zoos’ or even training those animals in zoos but when you see the difference kind and ethical training can make to the wellbeing of these animals it’s pretty impressive.

It’s so important for the emotions and wellbeing of all animals to be considered and shows how really anything is possible with kindness, patience and skill.

If you can teach a tiger a whistle recall, a giraffe to take position for an xray, a large troop of baboons to all recall inside at one time, binturong to follow targets to encourage movement when necessary, caiman lizards to follow a target for movement and positioning for weighing etc. Goats to have their hooves lifted for trimming, giant tortoises (some weighing 220kg) to recall to inside when needed and more. Without the use of aversives - it just shows there really are no excuses. And I feel pretty lucky to have witnessed and or been involved with all of the above.

I didn’t really know what to expect from nearly a week training completely different species but the takeaways are endless. And one of the biggest being that I’ll never be convinced that I should choose to train, guide and support dogs and their owners using aversion.

And as always so good to be around great people (keepers and other dog professionals) who were so generous sharing their experiences and knowledge so freely ✨
