It’s Animal Fact Friday again! As moth week is coming to an end I thought it would be apt to share some interesting facts about the Uraniidae family.

Luna moths (Actias luna) are from North America and they don’t eat in adult form. They don’t have mouth parts and they only live for around a week after emerging from their cocoon. Luna moths also have a tail in order to avoid being eaten by bats; this works by interrupting the bat’s sonar.

Moths are usually thought to be boring and brown in colour, when in actual fact they can be just as amazing as butterflies. For example the Madagascan sunset moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus) is multi coloured and iridescent and it’s not just in exotic locations that you can find beautiful moths. In the UK you can find elephant hawk moths (Deilephila elpenor), scarlet tiger moths (Callimorpha dominula) and garden tiger moths (Arctia caja).

It just goes to show that contrary to popular belief, moths are actually pretty interesting.

P.S. Here is a link to learn how to distinguish a moth from a butterfly:

Hi everyone, It’s our first ever Animal Fact Friday!

Cats have 32 muscles in each ear and dogs have 18 muscles in each ear. This allows them to move their ears around, called directional hearing, to focus on certain sounds. Whereas humans only have 4 vestigial muscles in each ear that are minimally developed and non-functional… that is unless you can wiggle your ears.
