Agility …..
I am seeing more and more posts of so called “agility classes “ being run by local clubs and they make my heart sink!!
Dogs being taken over equipment on leads, running over pieces of handmade wooden equipment, even solid hard plastic waste pipes buried into the ground to keep them from moving. Small dogs jumping heights for large dogs and large dogs jumping heights for small dogs which is just as bad. Jumping big thick heavy wooden horse poles instead of safe plastic lightweight poles.
This is an accident waiting to happen, so dangerous for injuries to dogs. I am a Royal kennel club agility judge and course planning, lines for the dogs, correct equipment and even the surface they run on is so so important.
Hard plastic Tunnels buried into the ground would be like a dog running into a concrete barrier if they come at it from a wrong angle, jumping over wooden heavy poles that don’t fall if they knock them can cause terrible injuries, launching off pieces of equipment without being trained to exit them correctly can cause long term damage to a dog. But yet I see these videos day after day and it makes me so sad that dogs are being subjected to these risks and owners are total unaware of the risks involved all they see is fun!
Please if you are going to go to agility classes make sure you find a club that the trainers either compete themselves or judge, make sure the equipment is true regulation agility equipment and hasn’t been thrown together in someone’s shed. When a training club buys agility equipment a full course can cost In excess of £10,000 and there is a reason it’s so expensive because it’s SAFE!
If you are going to a club that doesn’t have the regulation equipment, that your trainer doesn’t compete then I would rethink your membership and find a club that will know how to keep your dog safe from injury during training.
Fun agility is fun and I understand it has its place but it still needs to be safe for dogs and handler
