Pi getting Halloween ready with Tricks for Treats 🎃

Pi enjoying a little scurrying today

As much as I love the obedience, this is where Pi's passion lies. It is what she was bred to do, and I think that always has to be taken into consideration when keeping our dogs happy in their work ❤️

🐾 THINK • TRY • CLICK!

One of the things I love about shaping is giving the dog the opportunity to think and work things out for themselves.

When I’m first teaching a new behaviour, I’ll click and reward the small approximations towards my final goal. As the dog begins to understand each step, I’ll gradually raise my criteria for what earns the click, building the behaviour little by little until I’m clicking the finished behaviour I’m looking for.

This follows the shaping principles described by Karen Pryor, who advises us not to wait for the “whole picture”, but to click small movements in the right direction and then progressively raise the goal.

So with Kodi it might look something like:

Think → Try → Click → Reward → Think → Try again…

…with each click gradually taking us a little closer to our finished behaviour. 💡🐾

It’s such a lovely way of encouraging dogs to experiment, problem-solve and become active participants in their own learning.

And with a Border Collie, you can practically see the cogs turning. 😂🧠

A bit of fun with the pony today - Dog or horse, the training concept is the same .. mark and reward the behaviour you do want .. then what gets treated gets repeated !!

Easy Peasy !

There's nothing better than injecting a little fun and humour into your training sessions!

Whether it's tricks, food chases or toy play, variety keeps the motivation up for us all.

This little spaniel turns her paws to anything .. she just loves to work and a quick burst of weaving between training for her is ideal - you can literally see the joy on her face!

Many thanks to Gail of Fallenlight Photography who did an incredible job of capturing this weave sequence for us 🙏
