🔨 🐎 The Importance of Regular 6–8 Week Shoeing & Trimming 🐴
At MG Farriers Ltd, our priority is keeping your horse comfortable, balanced, and performing at their best. One of the most effective ways to support this is by maintaining a consistent 6–8 week shoeing and trimming schedule.
A horse’s hoof grows approximately 6–9 mm per month, and when too much time passes between appointments, the feet can become overgrown. This often means more hoof needs to be removed at once, which can lead to soreness and affect natural balance and movement.
Regular farrier care helps us:
✔️ Maintain correct hoof balance and alignment
✔️ Reduce strain on joints, ligaments, and tendons
✔️ Ensure shoes continue to fit and support the hoof properly
✔️ Prevent cracks, flares, and hoof distortion
✔️ Promote long-term soundness and overall comfort
Occasionally, horses may need to be seen sooner than the six-week mark, as recommended by veterinary professionals or your farrier. Certain conditions, hoof issues, or changes in workload can make shorter intervals essential for maintaining comfort and hoof health.
However, we do not recommend any horse go longer than 8 weeks between appointments. Extending beyond this increases the risk of imbalance, excessive hoof removal in one session, and potential post-shoeing soreness.
Consistent farrier visits allow us to make small, controlled adjustments that protect your horse’s long-term hoof health and wellbeing.
If you have any questions about your horse’s trimming or shoeing schedule, please feel free to get in touch — we’re always here to help.
