It’s that time of year! Pesky tick season is clearly upon us. I’ve removed 2 in less than a week!
If you’re a fab dog owner, and take your lovely pooch walking in any sort of grass or wooded area, ticks are potentially likely to be something you come across- at any time of year, but more likely in the warmer months.
Ticks are small parasites that attach to animal’s skin (including us!) to feed from the blood. They can transmit dangerous diseases such as Lyme Disease.
It’s important to check over your dog regularly. They can appear like a wart or a skin tag, but if you look closely you can see the legs. They like areas such as;
🕷️ Around the head, neck and ears
🕷️Chest and armpit area
🕷️ Between the toes
🕷️Under the tail and in the groin
Safe removal is important to avoid causing the tick to regurgitate and potentially spread diseases, or leave any parts behind which could cause an infection.
❌DO NOT pull with your fingers, tweezers or put anything like petroleum jelly on.
✅DO use a special tick twister tool (like in the video) and check that all mouth parts are intact.
🚑Make sure to keep an eye on the area where the tick has been removed from and seek veterinary advice if the area becomes very red and raised, or has a bullseye rash. Also if your dog becomes lethargic, has a fever or intermittent lameness this could be a sign of a tick borne disease so seek help straight away.
