🐾 Stray Cat Found – Queen Street, Louth 🐾

This lovely female cat has been found on Queen Street, Louth, and is currently being cared for by our team while we try to reunite her with her family.

She is safe, receiving plenty of love and attention, and we’re hoping to find her owners as soon as possible. Unfortunately, she is not microchipped, making it much harder to trace where she belongs.

If you recognise her or think she may be yours, please contact the practice.

This is also a timely reminder to ensure your pets are microchipped and that your contact details are kept up to date. A microchip can make all the difference in helping lost pets find their way home. 🐱💕

Barney 🤎 (& his unwanted passenger!)

Ticks are more common this time of year, we recommend checking your pet for ticks regularly as they can carry diseases that might make them very unwell.

We very quickly and safely removed the tick from his eyelid and sent just Barney on his way 😃

Did you know you can administer flea and tick treatment as a tablet, spot on and even an injection.

As May, and Vet Nurse Awareness Month, draws to an end... We would like to take a minute to appreciate our nursing team and all their hard work.

Nursing friendships are unlike anything else,
Completely different ages.
Completely different lives.
Completely different battles outside those hospital walls.
Sometimes exhausted.
Mostly over-caffeinated.

But the moment an emergency happens or a routine procedure is ready, none of it matters.
We move together without even thinking...
Passing meds, grabbing supplies, answering alarms, helping one another in each corner, and covering each other when someone needs a minute because they're overwhelmed.

Between the stress, the laughter, the tears, the happy cases, the sad cases, the "exciting" days and the hard days… You suddenly realise you're working alongside people who understand you the most and that's one of the reasons you do what you do so well.

We wouldn't function without our nursing team and we are grateful for each and every one of them... The qualified, the nearly qualified, the just started and the ones waiting to sign up.. We're proud of you all. 🤍

🖤 May - Nurse Awareness Month - Eloise 🖤

What Eloise said when asked what her favourite area of nursing is...

"Hello! My name is Eloise, and I qualified as a Veterinary Nurse before joining Black Sheep Vets in September 2024.

One of my favourite parts of the job is seeing the owners faces when they are reunited with their pets, whether they have been with us for a day procedure or staying in hospital. Seeing wagging tails and hearing loud purrs when they are back together is incredibly rewarding and reminds me how important our work is as a team.

As a veterinary nurse, I feel incredibly fortunate to have a career where I can make a genuine difference to the lives of both pets and their owners. From welcoming new puppies and kittens through the doors for their very first visit to supporting families through more challenging times, it is a real privilege to be part of their journey. Providing care, reassurance, and compassion every step of the way is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role."

🖤 May - Nurse Awareness Month - Kate 🖤

Kate was asked what her favourite area of nursing is, her answer was....

"Hi, I’m Kate and I’m the Head Nurse at Black Sheep Vets.
I have a particular interest in anaesthesia and emergency and critical care nursing. I like anaesthesia because every patient and every anaesthetic is different, so monitoring and patient support needs to be tailored to the individual. I particularly like closely monitoring patients throughout procedures and using knowledge of drugs, monitoring equipment and patient care alongside the vet to help keep patients stable and safe.
 
Emergency and critical care nursing is another area I’m passionate about because of the variety and unpredictability of emergency work and being able to jump into action to help animals when they need urgent care. It can be challenging at times, but it is also a really rewarding area of nursing to be involved in.

Alongside the clinical side of nursing, one of my favourite parts of my role as both a clinical coach and Head Nurse is supporting people within the team to develop their own interests and skills. I also like being involved in developing the practice through new equipment, improving ways of working and helping patient and client care run as smoothly as possible.
Helping owners when they have concerns about their pets and supporting them through treatment and ongoing care is another part of the role I really value. Whether that’s explaining information, arranging follow-up appointments and nurse clinics, or supporting owners with home care, I like helping things feel a little less overwhelming for both pets and their owners."

Some breeds seem to skip the puppy stage and we only really see them as adults. Staff members here say the breeds we rarely see here as puppies are bull terriers and greyhounds!

Today we were delighted to meet Tyson, a little bull terrier with a lot of character already! One by one staff members came out to meet him and walked away smiling. 😊

The sun is shining, and will be shining all weekend! Whilst we hope you all have a great weekend please be mindful of your pets in this heat - here is some friendly advice regarding heat stroke.

❗Early warning signs to look out for 👇

☀️ Heavy or excessive panting
☀️ Drooling more than usual
☀️ Bright red gums or tongue
☀️ Rapid heartbeat
☀️ Restlessness or agitation
☀️ Weakness or slowing down on walks

❗Signs that say your pet needs to see the vet immediately👇

☀️ Vomiting or diarrhea
☀️ Collapse or inability to stand
☀️ Confusion or disorientation
☀️ Seizures
☀️ Pale, blue, or purple gums
☀️ Loss of consciousness

❗How can you prevent heatstroke? 👇

☀️ Do not walk your dog in peak times
☀️ Reduce excercise in the heat/humid weather
☀️ Ensure fresh water is available at all times
☀️ If there's no natural shade, get creative and make some
☀️ Paddling pool in the garden (checking the water temp)
☀️ Check the pavement on the back of your hand before walking
☀️ Allow access indoors/cooler areas
☀️ Do not leave your dog in a parked car.
☀️ If your lucky enough - aircon!

❗If you suspect heatstroke, what can you do immediately to help? 👇

☀️ Move your dog to shade/indoors/cooler area
☀️ Offer cool (not ice cold) water
☀️ Pour cool (not ice cold) water over the body, focusing on the belly, paws and armpits - use a hose pipe if possible
☀️ Use a fan if available
☀️ Contact us

☀️ Covering your pet with wet towels for long periods
☀️ Forcing water into the mouth

🖤 May - Nurse Awareness Month - Harriet 🖤

What did Harriet say when asked what her favourite area of nursing is?...

“I started my nursing career in a mixed practice in 2014, qualified in 2017 and have been working at Black Sheep Vets since 2022. Like many RVN’s I enjoy many aspects of the job, but I have a strong interest in surgical nursing, anaesthesia monitoring, and senior patient care. I thrive in fast-paced clinical environments where high standards of patient care and teamwork are essential, this is something I’m lucky to have here at Black Sheep.

I enjoy supporting patients through every stage of their surgical treatment journey, ensuring their comfort and wellbeing remain at the forefront at all times.

I particularly value the rewarding nature of senior clinics, this is something I have helped create here at Black Sheep, having regular check up’s of our older patients is essential for patient welfare and creating a trust between patient and nurse.

I’m also guilty of being at the forefront of any small furry that makes it’s way into the practice, after years of working with some fantastic exotic vets I feel confident providing a high standard of care to our patients whether their hospitalised or in for a routine procedure."
