As well as taking care of the extremely hot weather, this time of year also means that we see a number of dogs that get grass seeds in their paws.
If you spot them early, you can remove them with tweezers…. But after about a week, the grass seed burrow between the toes like living pieces of pure evil and cause intense pain and infection requiring sedation or anaesthesia to remove them.

The video below is of my spaniel that had 3 grass seeds removed from a single lesion.

🍖☀️ BBQ season is here! ☀️🍖

Meet Goose. He may have become a favourite here at Blacksheep Vets, but today he's being used as a warning to other four-legged BBQ enthusiasts!

Goose and his family were enjoying a BBQ when he decided to help himself to a chicken skewer, leaving everyone wondering who had eaten the last one. A few days later, Goose became very poorly and very quickly. His owners soon realised that he must have been the culprit behind the missing skewer.

Their quick thinking may have saved his life. They brought Goose straight to us and let us know they suspected he had eaten a chicken skewer.
Goose was admitted immediately and underwent emergency surgery, during which the skewer was safely removed. We're delighted to say that Goose is now back home with his family and recovering well (although we're not sure he'll be invited to many more BBQs!).

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Goose. As much as we loved meeting you, we'd much rather see you for routine appointments only. ❤️

☀️ Happy bank holiday! ☀️
The sun is shining, and will be shining all weekend! Whilst we hope you all have a great weekend please be mindful of your pets in this heat - here is some friendly advice regarding heat stroke.

❗Early warning signs to look out for 👇

☀️ Heavy or excessive panting
☀️ Drooling more than usual
☀️ Bright red gums or tongue
☀️ Rapid heartbeat
☀️ Restlessness or agitation
☀️ Weakness or slowing down on walks

❗Signs that say your pet needs to see the vet immediately👇

☀️ Vomiting or diarrhea
☀️ Collapse or inability to stand
☀️ Confusion or disorientation
☀️ Seizures
☀️ Pale, blue, or purple gums
☀️ Loss of consciousness

❗How can you prevent heatstroke? 👇

☀️ Do not walk your dog in peak times
☀️ Reduce excercise in the heat/humid weather
☀️ Ensure fresh water is available at all times
☀️ If there's no natural shade, get creative and make some
☀️ Paddling pool in the garden (checking the water temp)
☀️ Check the pavement on the back of your hand before walking
☀️ Allow access indoors/cooler areas
☀️ Do not leave your dog in a parked car.
☀️ If your lucky enough - aircon!

❗If you suspect heatstroke, what can you do immediately to help? 👇

☀️ Move your dog to shade/indoors/cooler area
☀️ Offer cool (not ice cold) water
☀️ Pour cool (not ice cold) water over the body, focusing on the belly, paws and armpits - use a hose pipe if possible
☀️ Use a fan if available
☀️ Contact us

❗ Things to avoid if you suspect heatstroke👇

☀️ Ice baths
☀️ Covering your pet with wet towels for long periods
☀️ Forcing water into the mouth

❤️ May - Nurse Awareness Month - Lucy ❤️

What did Lucy say when asked what her favourite area of nursing is?...

“I qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2022, but I’ve been working in the veterinary field since leaving school, so caring for animals has always been a huge part of my life.

I joined Black Sheep Vets in 2021 and later moved over to Elev, where I now work emergency and critical care shifts.

I enjoy all aspects of nursing, but I have a particular passion for emergency and critical care. I love the fast-paced nature of ECC and the adrenaline that comes with it, especially when caring for our most critically ill patients.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a very poorly patient recover and go home to their family. At the same time, I feel truly honoured to support families through the more difficult moments, helping make the process as gentle and compassionate as possible when they have to say goodbye.

Every patient I care for is treated as if they were my own. They receive lots of TLC alongside their medical care, as I believe comfort, kindness, and attention play a huge role in recovery.“
