If there is a base/ground cover of even dried grass, better to move over it than kill the grass and soil structure by over grazing one patch.
Grassland can be resiliant but will not regrow if grazed down to the soil.

*** IT IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT TO REMOVE RAGWORT FROM ALL LAND USED FOR GRAZING HORSES AND LIVESTOCK ***

I have, once again, been shocked at the amount of ragwort I’ve seen left in paddocks with horses in. Even the most clueless of horse owners can normally tell you that ragwort is poisonous to horses, so why are so many owners not pulling it?! There really is no excuse! Most of the UK currently has little to no grass, and yes, horses will eat it; they normally only eat it when it’s dry/wilted, but why risk them eating it by leaving it in bare paddocks? I’m talking about the fields absolutely covered in it, rather than the odd piece that catches us all out.

It is actually an OFFENCE to leave ragwort in any field intended for grazing or hay making, AND an offence to allow it to seed and spread onto neighbouring land, if that neighbouring land is used for the same. That neighbour is within their rights to take LEGAL ACTION against you, if you allow ragwort to flower and seed on your land. I cannot fathom why you wouldn’t want to clear your own paddocks of ragwort, as it is both chronically and acutely POISONOUS to horses. It is absolutely not safe to just assume that horses won’t eat it. There is hardly any grass in any paddocks at the moment, and these are normally the paddocks that you see full of ragwort.

Under the Weeds Act 1959, you can be FINED for leaving ragwort to flower and seed on your land, if it is used for, or adjacent to, grazing livestock. Yes, obviously it’s unlikely that DEFRA are going to look into every reported case, or even many cases, but I don’t understand why people with horses think it’s ok to leave it.

Ragwort poisoning is often fatal, and at best causes severe liver damage.

Don’t be complacent and lazy; pull that ragwort TODAY! We are all caught out by the odd bit of ragwort here and there, that has seemingly appeared overnight, but I’m talking about the crops of the stuff that should have been pulled weeks ago.

The harbouring of diseases.

Leaving an overgrown paddock to rot over winter creates a perfect storm for pasture diseases, fungal spores, and bacteria.When tall, dead grass collapses into a wet mat on the soil surface, it forms a humid microclimate with zero air circulation. This environment harbors several specific pathogens that threaten both the pasture and the horses.
1. Grass Rust (Puccinia / Uromyces Fungi)What happens: Rust thrives in late summer and autumn when dews are heavy and grass is weak or under-managed. It appears as dusty, bright orange or yellow pustules on the grass leaves.
The winter transition:
In late autumn, these fungi switch to producing black, cold-hardy overwintering spores that live directly in the dead thatch and soil.The impact: While rust itself is not directly toxic to horses, it destroys the palatability of the grass, ruins turf density, and ensures the paddock will be heavily infected again the following spring.
2. Mold, Mildew, and Mycotoxins
What happens: As the tall stalks die and damp winter conditions set in, the grass rots instead of curing like properly baled hay. White, grey, or pink molds develop throughout the thick mat of dead material.
The impact on horses: When horses put their noses down into the grass to search for the sweet regrowth at the base, they inhale millions of these mold spores. This is a prime trigger for Equine Asthma (historically called Heaves or Recurrent Airway Obstruction).
Mycotoxin risks: Certain molds living on decaying pasture litter release dangerous mycotoxins. When horses ingest these while scavenging, it can cause digestive upset, low-grade colic, or a suppressed immune system.
3. Microscopic Pasture Litter Hazards
Facial Eczema (Pithomyces chartarum): This fungus grows specifically on the dead, decaying grass litter at the base of overgrown pastures. It produces toxic spores that can cause liver damage and severe skin photosensitivity if ingested by livestock.
Soil-Borne Bacteria: When grass turns into a mushy, rotten mat, it traps soil moisture. Horses walking through it scrape their heels on the coarse, dead stalks, allowing soil bacteria to enter the skin. This leads to painful winter skin conditions like mud fever and rain scald.
Summary for Your Liveries
Overgrown, un-topped grass does not turn into clean, healthy "standing hay". Instead, it acts like a dirty, wet sponge that blankets the ground, suffocates next year's good grass roots, and creates a breeding ground for mold spores and fungal pathogens that damage equine lungs.
