Holiday mood! ✨
We are staying in Perranporth in our caravan and dogs seem to love it!

A home visit with a 15-week-old Jack Russell puppy who was keeping everyone on their toes — terrorising the cat, pulling on the lead, not listening, struggling with recall, and showing all the usual puppy behaviours.

During the session, we worked through:

* Loose lead walking and short lead handling
* Recall training
* Stopping the jumping up
* Teaching calm behaviour around the cat instead of chasing and pestering
* Crate training
* House training
* General puppy boundaries and structure

Puppies don’t come pre-programmed knowing how to behave. With the right guidance, consistency, and clear communication, these behaviours can be shaped early before they become long-term habits.

Today Amber turns 12 years old ❤️

It honestly feels amazing to say that. On the 26th of May 2014, Amber was born, and over the last 12 years she’s been part of so many memories, adventures and changes in our lives.

We’ve travelled all over the country together with all of the dogs over the years.
The Outer Hebrides, Scotland near Ullapool, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Somerset, Dorset and now Cornwall, where she’s spending her 12th birthday today.

There’s been caravans, glamping huts, tents, holiday lets and so many walks and adventures in between.

Over those years we’ve sadly lost some very special dogs too. George our bullmastiff five years ago, Zac our Rottweiler seven years ago, and Amber’s brother Buzz two and a half years ago. They were all such a huge part of our lives and our travels together.

But alongside the heartbreak came new beginnings too, with Arthur, Ida and Giles joining the family over the years.
I still remember Ida being just a tiny puppy when we first took her up to the Outer Hebrides.

When you look back over 12 years with a dog, you realise they’ve been there through entire chapters of your life. Different homes, different holidays, different dogs, different moments… and Amber’s been there through all of it.

Happy 12th birthday to the most wonderful beautiful girl ❤️

Had such a lovely morning yesterday visiting an old friend who lives on a canal boat. Amber was invited along too and absolutely loved it. She couldn’t wait to get on the boat, then settled beautifully, sitting so still and calm while we had a lovely chat and catch-up. She also met their little pug and was so relaxed and happy the whole time.

My love for dogs started as a child. Growing up, we had a Springer Spaniel and Yorkshire Terriers, and from an early age I was completely drawn to dogs and their different personalities.

When I was 18 years old, I got my very first Boxer, and that’s where my real passion for the breed began. Since then, I’ve owned seven Boxers in total, and they’ve always held a special place in my heart. They’re headstrong, highly intelligent, full of life, and full of character — and that’s exactly what I love about them.

Over the years, I’ve shared my life with many different breeds including Bullmastiffs, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Pointers, and Terriers, to name just a few. Living and working with such a variety of dogs has given me a real understanding of different temperaments, behaviours, and personalities.

At the moment, my pack consists of Amber, my 12-year-old Boxer, who still has that wonderful Boxer spirit; Ida, my seven-year-old Rottweiler, who is calm, loyal, and incredibly switched on; Arthur, our Bullmastiff, who turns five in July and is a big gentle character; and Giles, who is two and a half and keeps everyone on their toes.

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life, not just as pets, but as family. Living alongside strong, intelligent breeds for so many years has taught me to truly understand canine behaviour, communication, and the importance of building trust and respect with every dog.

People often underestimate how important calmness really is.

These dogs aren’t being constantly entertained, corrected, or stimulated — they simply feel safe enough to switch off and relax while life carries on around them.

No chaos. No stress. No need to manage everything around them.

Sometimes the best kind of dog training looks exactly like this ✨🐾

I recently carried out a visit with a client and their 4-year-old male Rottweiler who is presenting with a number of challenging behaviours.
The dog is currently highly reactive in the home and will not allow visitors to enter, showing aggressive responses toward anyone who comes through the door. He has a history of biting both the owners and other people.
In addition, he displays food-related aggression, regularly barks at the front window at passers-by, and shows reactivity on walks, including lunging and barking at other dogs.
The primary concern for the owners is how to safely manage him in the home, particularly when visitors arrive, as this is the context in which the most serious incidents are occurring.
This case highlights the importance of robust management strategies alongside behaviour modification when working with dogs showing territorial and resource-guarding tendencies, as well as reactivity in multiple contexts.

Nearly 10 years ago, in September 2016, I had the unforgettable opportunity to meet David Attenborough when he visited Bradgate Park to officially open the new visitor centre.

As someone with a degree in geology, there were so many things I wanted to ask him about — questions about the natural world, geology, and the incredible places he had seen throughout his life. But the moment I shook his hand, I was completely lost for words. I was absolutely awestruck. Meeting someone who has inspired generations of people to appreciate nature and the planet was a truly surreal experience, and one I will never forget.

Now, as Sir David Attenborough celebrates his 100th birthday, I just want to say thank you and wish him the happiest of birthdays. His passion, knowledge, and dedication to the natural world have educated and inspired millions across the world for decades. It was an honour to meet him, even briefly, and that memory will stay with me forever.

Millie is a two-year-old Boxer who was rescued by my client around seven weeks ago. When she first came to me, she was dreadful on the lead—pulling, lunging, jumping up, barking, growling… just completely all over the place. There was very little control once she was outside, and walks had become increasingly difficult for her owners.

She was reacting to both people and dogs, so they came to see me for a two-and-a-half-hour session.

We focused on getting her calmer on the lead and introducing some structure to her walk. I brought my dogs in to help with this, starting with Amber, then introducing Ida and Giles, so Millie could begin to learn how to settle and feel more relaxed around other dogs.

The change has been brilliant. In less than a week, she’s made huge progress. Her owners are now able to walk her again, and we even did a walk out at Bradgate Park where she passed at least seven or eight dogs without any reaction at all.

So, my next client brought her two-year-old Labrador cross Vizsla in for training. She looks very much like a Labrador, but she’s got that classic Vizsla energy—very excitable.

She’s a lovely dog, but over the last few months she’d started to become reactive towards other dogs, and the owner never quite knew which dog would trigger a reaction.

When she arrived, she was all over the place on the lead—pulling, constantly moving, not settled at all. There was very little direction from the owner, no clear guidance like asking her to sit or wait, so she was making her own decisions.

As soon as she spotted another dog, she would move towards them in a heightened state of mind. So every walk was starting in that over-excited, stimulated state, and when she then came into contact with another dog—especially one that was also heightened—it often led to barking and reactive behaviour.

We had a two-and-a-half-hour session where we started, as always, by working around my dogs. This helped to get her calmer and begin teaching her how to walk properly on the lead.

From there, we progressed out onto Bradgate Park, staying in close proximity to my dogs so she could continue practising calm behaviour around distractions. We also took her into the tea room, which was very busy, and she was able to settle and sit calmly in that environment.

Overall, a really successful session and a great step forward for both dog and owner.
