🐾 Nail Length & Its Impact on Canine Biomechanics

Have you checked your dog’s nails recently?

Long nails do more than just click on the floor—they can significantly influence your dog’s posture, movement, and overall musculoskeletal health.

When nails are left untrimmed, they don’t just affect the paw—they can impact the entire kinetic chain.

Why Nail Length Matters

🟢 Alters Joint Angulation & Posture

Overgrown nails force the toe pads upward and backward (caudally), shifting weight proximally within the limb.

This disrupts normal limb loading and can lead to:

* Postural adaptations
* Altered joint alignment
* Compensatory movement patterns

📖 Reference: Zink & Van D**e (2013), Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

🟢 Impacts Gait & Reduces Stability

If nails contact the ground during stance, they can:

* Cause toe splaying
* Reduce effective ground contact
* Compromise traction

This may increase the risk of:

* Slipping
* Soft tissue strain (tendons/ligaments)
* Secondary compensatory issues

📖 References: Touch Animal Rehabilitation (2020); Canine Body Balance (2021)

🟢 Increases Musculoskeletal Load

Chronic postural change can contribute to:

* Myofascial tension
* Uneven joint loading
* Increased risk of conditions like Osteoarthritis in dogs

Particularly relevant in:

* Senior dogs
* Sporting/working dogs
* Orthopaedic cases

📖 Reference: Veterinary Clinics of North America (2020)

✅ Quick Nail Check

Ask yourself:

✔️ Do the nails touch the ground when your dog is standing?
✔️ Can you hear them tapping on hard flooring?

If yes—it’s time for a trim.

🟢 Clinical Insight

Nail length is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the simplest modifiable factors affecting biomechanics.

In practice, I frequently see improvements in:

* Postural alignment
* Limb loading symmetry
* Movement quality

…simply by addressing nail length alongside soft tissue work.

🟢 When to Seek Help

If your dog:

* Is reluctant to walk on certain surfaces
* Slips frequently
* Shows subtle gait changes
* Dislikes nail trimming

Support from a qualified professional (groomer, vet, or therapist) can make a significant difference.

🟢 Coat Changes in Your Dog & Myofascial Pain ✨
A subtle sign of discomfort that is often overlooked…

Here’s an older post, but one that is always worth revisiting—because understanding fascia and myofascial pain can make a huge difference to your dog’s comfort, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

🟢 Have You Noticed Changes in Your Dog’s Coat?

Does your dog have an area where the coat flicks up, swirls, stands differently, or doesn’t lie flat as it normally would?

This can sometimes be an indication of localised myofascial pain.

These coat changes are often linked to dysfunction within the fascia beneath the skin and can be one of the earliest visible signs that your dog may be experiencing discomfort.

🟢 What is Myofascia?

Myofascia is the vast network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle, joint, bone, and organ within the body.

It provides support, stability, movement, and communication throughout the body.

Fascia is not simply “packaging” around muscles—it plays a vital role in:

✔ Proprioception – the body’s awareness of position and movement
✔ Nociception – the sensing and processing of pain
✔ Force transmission
✔ Postural support
✔ Movement efficiency

Fascia is one of the most fascinating and clinically important systems in the body—and I could talk about it all day!

🟢 What is Myofascial Pain?

Myofascial pain originates within muscles and the surrounding fascial tissues.

It is extremely common in dogs with:

• Arthritis
• Orthopaedic conditions
• Post-surgical compensation
• Injury or trauma
• Sporting/working dog overuse
• Gait abnormalities
• Chronic compensatory patterns

It often develops when the body begins compensating for dysfunction elsewhere.

Alongside myofascial pain, we commonly find trigger points—tight, hyperirritable areas within muscle tissue.

These may present as:

• Skin twitching
• Flinching
• Juddering
• Sensitivity to light touch
• Reduced range of motion
• Changes in posture or gait

🟢 Why Do Coat Changes Occur?

These coat patterns often reflect the shape and tension of the dysfunctional tissue underneath.

When fascia becomes restricted, painful, adhered, or under abnormal tension, it affects the tissues above including the coat.

You may notice:

• Swirls
• Waves
• Raised hair
• Flicks
• Curled coat patterns
• Flattened areas
• Texture changes
• Coat discolouration

These are not always cosmetic—they can be clinical clues.

🟢 How Can I Help?

As a Canine Musculoskeletal Therapist, I use a range of advanced Myofascial Release (MFR) techniques, including:

✔ Direct Myofascial Release
✔ Indirect Myofascial Release
✔ Myofascial Cupping
✔ Trigger Point Therapy
✔ Clinical Massage Techniques

These techniques help restore:

✨ Tissue glide and fascial mobility
✨ Reduced restriction and tension
✨ Improved movement and function
✨ Better compensation patterns
✨ Reduced chronic pain

The goal is always improved comfort, mobility, and quality of life for your dog.

🟢 Fascinated by Fascia?

Because I certainly am.

Understanding:

✔ Fascia
✔ Myofascial pain
✔ Canine myofascial lines
✔ Compensation patterns
✔ Trigger points

…can completely change how we approach canine musculoskeletal health.

Dobby the Doberman!

Dobby is with me for Overnight Dog Sitting 💁🏻‍♀️ 🐾

Super handsome boy! I mean look at him 🥹😍
Loves to train with you and seeks to please, a few clips from his walk today.

Did you know my dog sitting service includes maintaining any training within the home and out on walks, for clients and already trained dogs on request.

If your struggling with your dogs behaviour and your struggling to find the right person to take care of your dog that is reactive or has been turned away by kennels.. or maybe you want more for your dog whilst your away, send me a DM with any Questions you have 💭

Overnight sitting is becoming very popular and lots of owners are choosing this over standard boarding/kennels because it’s a more customised service for your dog, that is not to say all kennels operate the same. Always do your research and what you thinks best for your dog 👌🏻

‼️ DEAR TRAINERS AND YOUR PUPPY CLASSES

Can we please talk about puppy classes and the obsession with “playtime”? 🙃

If your puppy class includes a chunk of free-for-all wrestling at the beginning or end, I’m begging you stop calling it a puppy training class. Call it what it is: soft play for puppies.

A puppy class should not be about hyping puppies up, letting them rehearse chaotic play, and then acting surprised when they struggle to focus around other dogs later. Puppies do not need a “play fight” as a reward for good training. That completely misses the point.

Puppy classes should be about:
• Learning to be calm and neutral around other dogs
• Building focus and engagement with the owner
• Understanding that other puppies exist… without needing to interact with them

The real skill is not “my puppy can play with everyone.”
The real skill is “my puppy can ignore everyone.”

If the end goal is well-adjusted, emotionally regulated dogs, then we should be reinforcing calm behaviour around other puppies, not undoing the session by unleashing them at the end and calling it enrichment.

So please, trainers: if the main event is puppy playtime, be honest about it. And if it’s a training class, let’s actually train the dogs for the world they’ll live in.

🦷 MUZZLE TRAINING 🦷

There are a lot of misconceptions around the muzzle.. and often a tool that’s not always conditioned well enough in my opinion. Muzzles have their place in responsible dog ownership as well as training protocols, all dogs can benefit from muzzle training as no dog is exempt from pain!

Muzzle training is one of my favourite tools to condition a dog to because it doesn’t have to restrict them being a dog or doing doggy things. By that I mean they should have a positive association to the muzzle, be able to still run around, walk, sniff, fully pant, drink and take food. A muzzle should make a dogs world bigger not smaller! And most importantly safety precautions have been taken to set a dog up for success in specific scenarios which also keeps other dogs, people & livestock safe.

There are multiple reasons a dog might be wearing a muzzle…

• They are working through reactivity

• Scavenging

• Aggression

• Training Purposes (vets, groomers, proofing etc)

• Management/Safety

Muzzles are preventative tools that help us keep dogs not only safe but under control, you can also get creative with them when conditioning them which I personally love and is fun for the dog too!

You should make sure your muzzle…

• Fits Correctly

• Allows a full pant

• Enables drinking & taking food.

• Durable & breathable material

• Conditioned correctly

• Easy to apply & remove

• Comfortable for longer wear

I like to use a multi method approach to condition the muzzle and get creative! 😊

Let’s Advocate for dogs that wear muzzles and their responsible use, they do not necessarily mean a dog is “bad”. 🐾

We can work on a selection of these or all of them over time, puppy visits are kept to 30mins max to not overwhelm or overwork your puppy at one time but frequent visits are required over a period so the training is maintained and you see results. Note these visits take place indoors & outdoors.

These visits are a minimum of 3 days a week, I also send video updates on every visit so you can watch back how I work with your puppy as well as written information for you to follow, progress and continue the teaching outside of these visits alongside having my support where needed.

DM me for prices and more information or any questions you may have 😊 I’m happy to discuss and arrange a meet & greet prior.

(There will also be an option of being put on a waiting list for when more slots become available, this will roll onto the next person should you no longer need the service when contacted)
