๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿพ Important Update: Prescription Medication Rules for Pets ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’Š

You may have noticed that your vet sometimes asks to see your pet before prescribing or repeating certain medications. This isn't to make things more difficultโ€”it's to make sure your pet is receiving the safest and most appropriate care.

Current UK veterinary prescribing regulations mean that:

๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Your pet must be under our care before we can prescribe Prescription Only Medicines (POM-V).

๐Ÿฉบ Regular check-ups are required to ensure medications are still suitable, effective and safe. Your vet will decide how often your pet needs to be examined based on their condition and the medication they're taking.

๐Ÿ’Š Some long-term medications can be prescribed for longer periods, while others require more frequent examinations or monitoring, such as blood tests or blood pressure checks.

๐Ÿ“‹ Written prescriptions are available on request, allowing you to purchase medication from another veterinary practice or an accredited online pharmacy if you wish. A prescription fee may apply.

โค๏ธ These regulations are in place to protect your pet. Health conditions can change over time, and regular examinations help us:
โœ”๏ธ Ensure medication is still the correct choice.
โœ”๏ธ Check for side effects.
โœ”๏ธ Adjust doses if needed.
โœ”๏ธ Detect any new health concerns early.

We understand it can sometimes be frustrating if you're asked to book a check-up before more medication can be dispensed, but these guidelines are designed with your pet's wellbeing at heart.

If you're unsure when your pet is next due for a medication review, or have any questions about their prescriptions, please don't hesitate to contact our friendly teamโ€”we're always happy to help. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’š Meet the adorable Enzo! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฑ

This handsome young kitten came to see our team after having a couple of episodes of vomiting and watery diarrhoea. Despite his upset tummy, Enzo was still bright, playful and full of kitten energy! ๐Ÿพ

After a thorough examination, everything else looked normal, and the most likely cause was gastroenteritisโ€”possibly after helping himself to a visiting dog's food! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Just like us, cats can develop an upset stomach if they eat something different or richer than they're used to.

To help Enzo get back to his mischievous self, we recommended:
๐Ÿฅฃ A gentle gastrointestinal diet
๐Ÿฆ  Probiotics to support his digestive system
๐Ÿ’ง Plenty of fresh water and lots of monitoring at home

โš ๏ธ While a mild tummy upset often settles quickly, vomiting and diarrhoea can sometimes be a sign of something more serious, especially in young kittens. If your pet is repeatedly sick, becomes lethargic, stops eating, or you notice blood in their vomit or diarrhoea, it's important to contact your vet as soon as possible.

We're pleased to say Enzo was still his happy, playful self, and we hope he's feeling much better very soon! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’š Say hello to the gorgeous Muji! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฑ

This beautiful little kitten recently visited us to be microchipped, and she was as brave as she was adorable! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Did you know that it is now a legal requirement in England for all pet cats to be microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age?

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is inserted just under the skin between your cat's shoulder blades. The procedure is quick, safe and no more uncomfortable than a routine vaccination.

If your cat ever goes missing and is found by a vet or rescue centre, they can scan the microchip to access your contact details, giving you the best possible chance of being reunited.

๐Ÿพ A few important reminders:
โœ… Make sure your contact details are always kept up to date on the microchip database.
โœ… Indoor cats should be microchipped tooโ€”they can still escape unexpectedly!
โœ… A microchip is permanent, but your details need to stay current if you move house or change your phone number.

Well done, Muji, for being such a little superstar! โญ We hope you enjoyed plenty of cuddles (and maybe a few treats!) after your visit.

๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿถ Rosy was all smiles for her annual booster vaccination! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’‰

This gorgeous girl visited us recently for her yearly health check and booster vaccination, and she was an absolute superstar from start to finish! โญ

Did you know that annual booster vaccinations help protect your dog against serious, and in some cases life-threatening, diseases? They're a simple way to keep your best friend healthy and protected throughout their life.

A booster appointment isn't just about vaccinations either. It's also a great opportunity for your vet to carry out a full nose-to-tail health check, listening to your dog's heart, checking their eyes, ears, teeth, joints and overall condition. It's the perfect chance to spot any potential problems early.

Rosy took everything in her stride and was rewarded with plenty of fuss (and hopefully a tasty treat afterwards! ๐Ÿฆด).

Thank you for being such a brave girl, Rosy! We loved seeing you and can't wait for your next visit. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒพ Poor Loki had a very unwelcome hitchhiker! ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿพ

This handsome boy came to see us after developing a sore, swollen paw. After examining him, our fabulous vet Tsvetomir suspected the culprit was a grass seed.

To make sure Loki was comfortable and to allow a thorough examination, he was gently sedated. Sure enough, a grass seed was found buried in his paw and was carefully removed. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Grass seeds may look harmless, but they can cause a surprising amount of trouble. Their pointed shape and tiny barbs mean they can work their way forwards through the skin, but they can't easily come back out. They commonly become lodged:
๐ŸŒพ Between the toes.
๐ŸŒพ In the ears.
๐ŸŒพ Up the nose.
๐ŸŒพ Under the eyelids.
๐ŸŒพ In the skin and coat.

If left untreated, grass seeds can continue to migrate deeper into the body, leading to painful infections, abscesses, and sometimes even surgery to remove them.

๐Ÿถ During the summer months, it's a good idea to:
โœ”๏ธ Check your dog's paws after every walk.
โœ”๏ธ Look for limping, excessive licking, swelling, or redness.
โœ”๏ธ Remove any seeds caught in the coat before they work their way into the skin.

We're pleased to say Loki recovered well from his sedation and went home much more comfortable, with one less pesky grass seed to worry about! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

Get well soon, Loki! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿฑ Meet the lovely Gizmo! โค๏ธ

Poor Gizmo has been struggling with ongoing swelling and soreness around one of his eyes, so today our vet decided it was time for a closer look.

Because the eye was too uncomfortable to examine thoroughly while he was awake, Gizmo was given a light sedation. This allowed us to carefully inspect the eye and discover the cause of the problemโ€”a surprising hole on the inside of his upper eyelid.

This type of injury can be very painful and cause ongoing irritation every time the eyelid moves over the surface of the eye, so it's important to identify and treat it as soon as possible.

Gizmo is now heading home with:
๐Ÿ’Š Antibiotic eye drops to help prevent or treat infection.
๐Ÿ’ง Anti-inflammatory (NSAID) eye drops to reduce pain and swelling.

We hope these medications will have him feeling much more comfortable over the next few days. โค๏ธ

Eye problems in cats can worsen quickly, so if you notice your pet squinting, excessive watering, redness, swelling, or rubbing at their eye, it's always worth having them checked by a vet as soon as possible.

Get well soon, Gizmo! We can't wait to see you feeling much brighter. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ’š Say hello to the beautiful Mini & Autumn! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฐ

These gorgeous bunnies popped into the practice today for a routine nail clip, and they were absolute stars! โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‡

One thing you might notice in these photos is how they are being held with their backs fully supported. This is incredibly important for rabbits.

Unlike cats and dogs, rabbits have very powerful back legs but surprisingly delicate bones. If they become frightened and kick out while being held without proper support, they can suffer serious spinal injuries, which can sometimes lead to permanent paralysis.

That's why our team always takes extra care to:
๐Ÿพ Support their back and hindquarters at all times.
๐Ÿพ Hold them close to the body so they feel safe and secure.
๐Ÿพ Keep handling as calm and gentle as possible to reduce stress.

Even something as simple as a nail clip is done with your rabbit's comfort and safety as our top priority. โค๏ธ

Mini and Autumn were wonderfully behaved and went home with perfectly trimmed nails and lots of fuss! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฐ

Do your rabbits need a nail trim? Give us a call and we'd be happy to help! ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿ’š
