🐛Flystrike is condition that affects small animals - especially rabbits, and occurs when flies lay their eggs on soiled skin
The eggs hatch into maggots that burrow into the skin, causing pain, infection and sever damage
It is most common in the warmer weather

Who Is at Risk?
Flystrike is most common during warm, damp weather. Flies (typically blowflies or greenbottles) are strongly drawn to warm, moist environments.

🐾 Soiled fur or rear ends: Animals that cannot clean themselves properly or have diarrhoea are highly vulnerable.
🐾Wounds: Open cuts, sores, or skin lesions are prime targets.
Ill or elderly animals: Pets that are weakened, immobile, or obese struggle to groom and are at greater risk.

Warning Signs
❗Visible eggs or maggots: Small white clusters of eggs or actively moving maggots in the fur or on the skin.
❗Foul odour: A strong, unusual smell radiating from the pet.
❗Behavioural changes: Agitation, restlessness, or unusual biting, scratching, or licking at the affected area.
❗Lethargy: Severe cases can lead to shock, collapse, or a drop in body temperature.

Prevention
💚 Regular checks: Inspect your animal’s fur and rear end daily, especially during warmer months.
💚 Good hygiene: Keep living areas clean, dry, and free of soiled bedding or uneaten food that attracts flies.
💚 Weight and diet management: Ensure animals are kept at a healthy weight and on a proper diet so they can groom themselves properly.
💚Veterinary products: Ask us about preventative sprays or treatments.

This stunning lad is George 🥰
George decided to take himself off for a while and retuned home limping
We suspect he may have bit hit by a vehicle or had a fall whilst he was missing from home 😟
He came to see us today for our lovely vet Orsolya to take some x-rays as pain relief/anti-inflammatories did not seem to be helping

X-rays show that the poor boy has dislocated his left hip

We are working with his lovely owner to put together a plan for him, which will likely involve surgery
Don't worry George - we will get you back on your feet again 💚

They came to see us for their routine neutering procedures

Neutering your male cat offers significant health, behavioural, and welfare benefits. It reduces the urge to roam and fight, lowers the risk of contracting diseases like FIV, eliminates testicular cancer risk, and prevents indoor urine spraying. 🐾

Hot Weather Alert for Pet Owners! 🐾
As we head into what is likely to be a very hot bank holiday weekend, it's important to remember that our dogs feel the heat even more than we do. What might seem like a pleasant summer walk can quickly turn dangerous—or even deadly—for your furry friend.
🔥 Why It’s Risky:
Pavement burns: If the ground is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Asphalt can reach 130°F (54°C) or more on a 90°F (32°C) day.
Heatstroke: Dogs can't sweat like we do. They cool down by panting, which isn't enough in extreme heat. Heatstroke can come on fast and can be fatal.
Dehydration: Long walks in the sun increase the risk of dehydration, especially for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs.
🚫 Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day (typically 10 AM – 6 PM). Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the pavement and air are cooler.
✅ Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:
Walk on grass when possible
Always bring water
Keep walks short
Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a minute
Watch for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or vomiting
Your dog relies on you to keep them safe—let’s make sure summer is fun, not fatal. 🐶💛

They are Yorkshire Terriers
The "Yorkie" is a feisty, confident toy dog breed famous for it's big personality. Despite their smaller stature, these pups possess a bold, courageous spirit inherited from their 19th-century origins as rat-catchers in English mills. 🐾

He spent the day with us for cuddles, sorry, for his neutering procedure

Neutering your male cat prevents unwanted litters and protects against testicular cancer. It also curbs testosterone-driven behaviors like urine spraying, territorial roaming, and fighting, which significantly lowers your cat's risk of being injured by cars or contracting infectious diseases

Jenny came to see us for her routine neutering procedure
We support the Cats Protection C4 scheme which allows owners to have neutering at a low cost 🐾
We are always happy to help local charities, and were even happier to spend the day with this lovely girl 😻
