Snakes in Art – Medusa 🐍

Painted around 1597 by Caravaggio, Medusa turns the snake into a symbol of fear, transformation, and power. Instead of portraying Medusa as a distant mythological creature, Caravaggio captures the instant of her death — her face frozen in terror while venomous snakes twist violently from her head.

In Greek mythology, Medusa’s serpent hair symbolised both danger and protection. Across art history, snakes have represented temptation, rebirth, immortality, and chaos, and Caravaggio’s dramatic realism makes them feel startlingly alive.

Snakes Across Mythology: Asclepius and the Secret of Life 🐍

In ancient Greece, there was a god unlike the others — not a god of war or storms, but of healing.

His name was Asclepius.

People traveled across mountains and seas to seek his help. Temples were built in his honor where the sick would sleep, hoping for dreams that revealed their cure.

One day, as the story goes, Asclepius struck down a serpent that crossed his path. Moments later, another snake appeared, carrying a green herb in its mouth. It touched the fallen serpent — and life returned.

Asclepius watched in silence.

The serpent had revealed a secret: death was not always the end.

From that day forward, snakes were sacred in his temples. They moved freely among the ill, symbols of renewal and restored health. Their shedding skin became a sign of illness cast off and life beginning again.

In this myth, the snake is not poison — it is knowledge. Not death — but restoration.

A story where the serpent does not end life, but teaches how to heal it.

Snakes Across Mythology: Mucalinda, the Serpent Who Shielded Enlightenment 🐍

The storm came without warning.

As Siddhartha Gautama sat in meditation beneath the tree of awakening, the sky darkened and rain fell in violent sheets. Winds tore through the forest. Floodwaters rose.

From beneath the earth emerged Mucalinda, the Nāga king. He did not strike. He did not hiss.

Instead, the great serpent coiled his body around the meditating figure and spread his many-hooded crown above him like a living umbrella. For seven days the storm raged. For seven days the serpent held firm.

When the skies cleared, Mucalinda uncoiled, bowed, and returned to the depths.

In this story, the serpent does not disturb enlightenment — it protects it. The snake becomes guardian of stillness, defender of wisdom, and ally of awakening.

A story where the snake does not tempt the seeker — but shelters him.
