Snakes in Art – Medusa 🐍
Painted around 1597 by Caravaggio, Medusa turns the snake into a symbol of fear, transformation, and power. Instead of portraying Medusa as a distant mythological creature, Caravaggio captures the instant of her death — her face frozen in terror while venomous snakes twist violently from her head.
In Greek mythology, Medusa’s serpent hair symbolised both danger and protection. Across art history, snakes have represented temptation, rebirth, immortality, and chaos, and Caravaggio’s dramatic realism makes them feel startlingly alive.
