🐾 cholecystectomy 🐾

This lovely dog Valente underwent surgery to remove her gall bladder following an ultrasound diagnosis of a gall bladder mucocele and a dilated common bile duct.

A gall bladder mucocele occurs when thickened bile and mucus accumulate within the gall bladder, preventing it from emptying normally. This can lead to serious complications, making early diagnosis and appropriate treatment essential.

🩺 Ultrasound played a vital role in identifying the abnormality and helping guide the decision to proceed with surgery by showing the surgeon exactly what was going on internally prior to exploration. An ultrasound machine works by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body and using the returning echoes to create a real-time image of the internal organs. In veterinary medicine, it is particularly useful for examining organs such as the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, spleen and intestines.

The gall bladder was surgically removed (cholecystectomy) by our wonderful surgeon Eleni, with the aim of preventing further complications and giving this patient the best possible chance of recovery. 💙

🐾Tendonectomy🐾

Ginny underwent a CT scan at Streatham Hill vets after being advised that this was the best course of action post orthopaedic exam with surgeon Christos. A CT scan was performed to investigate a problem affecting the pad of the left forelimb’s fourth digit. Imaging confirmed soft-tissue swelling in the affected area, helping guide the next steps in treatment.

Ginny was then transferred to us here at AVL for further investigation and surgery.

She subsequently underwent a superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendonectomy to address the swollen digit, done by Christos. This procedure involves surgically removing a section of the superficial digital flexor tendon, which plays an important role in flexing the toes. The aim is to address the underlying problem affecting the digit and improve comfort and function.

✨ Winnie update✨

Winnie was referred to us In August after her owner had noticed that her hips seemed painful. An MRI scan was completed by John from London Veterinary Neurology and her pain was managed with medication.

After an orthopaedic exam with Christos it was discovered that from an orthopaedic point of view Winnie’s hips were perfect, so why was she in pain? 🤔

After a reassessment from John and help from her past MRI scan, we discovered that the problem was actually caused by a compressed nerve. This highlighted just how important advanced imaging can be in helping us get to the root of a problem when the cause of pain isn't always obvious.

Following the diagnosis, the decision was made to perform surgery to decompress the affected nerve, with the aim of relieving the pressure and helping the Winnie on the road to recovery. 🩺🐶

Surgeons Christos and John worked together on Winnie’s surgery, a collaborative effort to reduce Winnie’s pain and get her back to running and playing. 🫶

🐾Spinal surgery🐾

Found by her owner under a car,this poor little cat Mitsanna had suffered a serious spinal injury and needed urgent medical attention. 💔🐈‍⬛

After having a CT scan at our sister hospital Streatham Hill Mitsanna was transferred to us here at AVL for surgery. A collaborative surgery by John (London veterinary neurology) and Eleni the procedure required incredible precision from the team,every movement had to be carefully planned and executed to give her the best possible chance of recovery following surgery. Mitsanna had suffered a L7-S1 fracture-luxation which John and Eleni stabalised using bilateral sacral screws,which can be seen in her x-rays. 🩺

She was then hospitalised post operatively at Streatham Hill to ensure 24/7 care and pain relief being put on strict cage rest to ensure her spine heals as intended.

We wish Mitsanna all the best and hope she recovers well! ✨❤

🧠 Exciting News from Advanced Vetcare London! 🔬🐾

We are incredibly proud to share that Professor Marios Charalambous, our Lead Neurologist at Advanced Vetcare London, has published new research exploring how the canine brain responds to intranasal midazolam, an important medication used in managing seizure emergencies in dogs.

The research revealed that measurable changes in brain activity can occur within just 1–3 minutes of administration, providing valuable new insights into how this treatment affects the brain.

🐶 Why is this important?

These findings help strengthen our understanding of emergency seizure treatments and could support further research into improving care for dogs experiencing seizures.

👏 A huge congratulations to Professor Charalambous and his fellow researchers on this fantastic achievement!

🐾T'challa update🐾

A few weeks ago T'challa visited us for an MRI to investigate some soft tissue swelling. After his owners recieved the wonderful news that the lump had not extended into the spinal canal the decision was made to have it removed! 🐶

The surgical sight was prepped by nurses and T'challa was trasferred into theatre where surgeon Christos removed T'challas lump under general anaesthetic. The mass was carefully excised and the surrounding tissue was preserved as much as possible to achieve a clean and comfortable closure. ✨

After surgery T'challa recovered in his kennel, being provided with food and recieving love from the whole team. We have loved seeing T'challa grow over the last few weeks and hope for a smooth recovery! ❤️

🐱Feline orthopaedic surgery

This week surgeons Christos and Eleni worked together to repair a right sacroiliac luxation.🩺

This lovely cat Feebee presented following trauma with a right sacroiliac luxation, a painful injury where the connection between the pelvis and spine becomes disrupted.

Surgical stabilisation was performed to accurately realign the sacroiliac joint and restore pelvic stability. Careful repositioning and fixation were essential to achieve a strong repair while minimising trauma to the surrounding structures. 🦴

Following surgery,the patient was provided with appropriate pain relief and strict activity restrictions to allow the repair to heal. 🐾

🐾 Femoral Head and Neck Excision (FHNE)🐾

This week Eleni preformed a FHNE,what is this?

🩻 BEFORE:
The hip was causing significant pain and discomfort, making normal activities such as walking, jumping and playing difficult.🐈‍⬛

A FHNE is a surgical procedure performed when the hip joint is severely damaged or painful.
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint, with the femoral head forming the “ball” at the top of the thigh bone. During an FHNE, the damaged femoral head and neck are carefully removed.

✨Recovery
Over time, the surrounding muscles and soft tissues form a false joint, allowing the leg to move comfortably.Recovery involves plenty of rest initially, followed by a gradual return to activity and, where appropriate, physiotherapy or rehabilitation.

🧠Meet George🧠

George was seen by the Neurology and the team at Advanced Vetcare London after developing weakness on his left side, problems with balance and walking, and sadly, a seizure.

An MRI revealed a large mass on the right side of his brain, and based on the findings, the most likely diagnosis is a meningioma (brain tumour).

Unfortunately, the tumour is already very large and is putting significant pressure on his brain. We have been told that it has likely been growing slowly for some time.
There are treatment options, including medication, radiation therapy and potentially surgery, but given the size and location of the tumour, the situation is complicated. Radiation offers the best non-surgical option and may give us more time with him.

For now, our priority is simply George's comfort and quality of life. George is such a special boy, and we are going to help him as much as we can. ❤️🐾
