🩺Lap Spay🩺

This week Christos has been busy performing lap spays.

A laparoscopic spay, also known as a keyhole spay, is a modern alternative to traditional spaying. Unlike a traditional spay (ovariohysterectomy), which removes both the ovaries and uterus through a larger abdominal incision. A laparoscopic spay typically removes only the ovaries (ovariectomy) through one to three small incisions in the abdomen using specialised equipment.

🐾 Less post-operative pain.
🐾Fewer stitches, both internally and externally.
🐾 Return to normal exercise levels once signed off by your vet.

As the incisions are smaller, there is a smaller risk of post-operative complications with the incisions.

If you would like to enquire or book in for a lap spay please do not hesitate to contact us

💚Meet Zola💚

Zola was referred to our Orthopaedic surgeon Christos after she fractured her right hind leg.

The referring vets performed x-rays and sent them over to Christos to review and advise the best approach. Christos viewed the x-rays and diagnosed Zola with a Salter- Harris Fracture.

A Salter-Harris fracture is a fracture that involves the growth plate or physis in a young and growing dogs. The growth plate is a thin line of cartilage near the end of the bones. This allows them to grow in length and the dog grows and matures. The growth plate is the weakest part of the dogs developing bone, it is much more susceptible to injury and fracture than the surrounding areas.

These fractures are most often caused by trauma, such as:
🐾Falls
🐾Being hit by a car
🐾Accidents during play or exercise

Zola came to Advanced Vet Care for the fracture to be repaired. Christos used pins and wire to fix the fracture.

Zola will continue her post op care at home with her family and we will see her for regular checks to ensure she is healing well.

💚Update on Holmes💚

Some of you may remember Holmes who one of our surgeons placed an external fixator on a few months back.

Holmes has been in for regular post operative checks and the decision was made to remove the ex-fix.

The x-rays showed new bone production and successful fusion if the carpometacarpal joints.

Holmes will be continued to be monitored and on cage rest and we will continue to monitor the healing of the bone

💚 Hemilaminectomy💚

Today at Advanced Vet Care, John from London Vet Neurology came and performed a hemilaminectomy.

John is a neurologist who has been working alongside Advanced Vet Care since the beginning of the year. This week he saw a case that needed an urgent MRI which our team at AVL booked in and performed for him.

It was noted in the MRI that the patient needed surgery so John performed it at AVL so we didn’t need to transport the patient to much due to being in pain and needing to be careful of the spine

A hemilaminectomy is a surgical procedure performed by specialised surgeons. It removes a small part of the bone (called the lamina) on only one side of a vertebra. This creates a small window to relieve pressure on a pinched nerve or the spinal cord.

This particular patient had surgery at the disc space L3-L4 which was successfully removed.

The patient will remain in hospital receiving regular pain medication and care for a few days until he’s comfortable to go home.
