Jumping up - one of the most common puppy problems I help with...it DOES drive people nuts & can get quite out of hand.
Puppies learn that jumping is very effective at getting attention or starting an interaction BUT it can occur due to excitement, frustration, ambivalence or anxiety - lots of different emotional reasons.
First, understand the context behind jumping and then look at the most apprpriate fix
👉Join me at puppygeek.co.uk to learn why your dog is jumping and how to fix it FAST!

Laaarge dog toys! Owners often ask me what's the best course of action when pups are nipping...well substitution is the best FIRST port of call BUT I like to opt for a large toy, something larger than your dog's head! Reason? Well firstly it does help to stop YOU being nipped (it's like a shield 😃) & it's great for pups to take their frustration out on, they often like to writhe & rag about on it...far better than a teeny tiny one 👍

If you're struggling with puppy biting, you're not alone, it's a very common theme in Step 2 Welcome Puppy puppygeek.co.uk

I LOVE hearing how you've been getting on! Puppy Geek follows you & your pup right up to Puppy's 1st birthday so there's plenty of time for ongoing support 😃👍

Max - Is nearing 9m now, was one of those 'goody 4 paws pups' but then recall nosedived...we've done loads of focal work to get him back on track
Daisy - Is a little rescue pup. She's needed a lot of help building comfort & safe spaces & work with careful/consensual socialization
Inca - Has now started Step 3 Life Skills Training & is just super quick to pick everything up!

Each day has a different challenge & each pup is totally different & individual...that's why Puppy Geek is personalised 🥰 puppygeek.co.uk

Mondays TOP TIPS:
FOOD REWARDS
⬆️High Value rewards (tasty food - the smellier the better) is great when there's lots of competing distractions & your dog may be struggling in that environment. Another bonus is that you'll only likely need a small portion.
⬇️Low Value rewards in low distracting environments or when your dog has already learned what you're teaching pretty well. Also opt for this is you find your dog gets a little hyped up by food or if you find food overshadows learning.

Is your puppy suffering from 'deaf ears'!! 😆 Don't worry it's completely normal! Think about it, you've literally only just been born & your'e out & about in this fabulous & overwhelming world full of smells & sights & as pup parents we can't even fathom the hearing, smelling capability of our pups! It's no wonder then that when we ask them to do something, well.....they're a little bit distracted by what's SO NEW to them!!
😃Always start your learning in a quiet environment...build your basics there.
At Step 3 of my puppy programme - Life Skills we specifically work on real life skills including distractions...how to get your puppy great with them....see you there! puppygeek.co.uk

The dog world is FULL of suggestions - do this, do that...how do you know what's right & what's that? It's SO confusing...that's really why I created Puppy Geek in the first place, so puppy parents could have personalised puppy help.
It's so easy to fall foul of myths:
❌Socialization involves getting out there & meeting everyone & everything - well to a point but CAREFULLY & consent is the name of the game. Watch carefully for your puppy's reaction....any sign of anxiety and back off. Socialization includes habituation to many different experiences, sounds, settings.
❌ Let puppies cry it out - Puppies cry for different reasons & firstly understand why. If it's distress, well leaving them won't help...& will increase distress, if it's due to detachment, then some form of desensitization will be needed
❌Puppies need lots of exercise - well they have boundless energy that's for sure but me careful about running their legs off before growth plates have fused especially in larger breeds or you could risk joint damage. Stick to mental enrichment games

Toilet training/potty training 🤷‍♀️ whatever you want to call it you DON'T want puppy toileting inside your house!! You want it fixed fast!
My number 1 tip is:
💥 Ditch the puppy pads
Yes that's right! Shops are flooded with them but IMO they slow learning & make it more difficult for puppy to understand that outside is the place to go!

Crikey some pups can be little crocodiles can't they! 🐊 SUCH sharp teeth! You know sometimes I see new pup parents who're literally black & blue because of it & there's NO way that should be the case. Biting is COMPLETELY normal, puppy gums are sore but there's so many positive and kind ways to help reduce it, starting with
😁substituting alternative & more rewarding response
😁 rewarding calm
❌not punishing puppy
