Introducing ‘Pointed T’, a doghouse made solely from paper, created by HARA DESIGN INSTITUTE – Japanese designer Misawa Haruka for Japanese Terrier. It centres around a floating roof made from a single sheet of paper, which is wrapped and suspended from the ceiling. For dogs, like Japanese Terriers, it provides a playful hideaway while, for their human companions, it functions as a fun design object.

Thank you for sharing this photo of George enjoying his wanmock.

Designed by Torafu Architects, Wanmock is a wooden frame on which the owners’ old clothes are stretched, making use of the elasticity of the fabric, becomes a hammock of sorts, enveloping the dog’s body. For summer, a material that lets the air through; in winter something thicker; the clothing can be changed with the seasons. With the Wan-mock, the owner, sitting on the sofa, can reach out and touch the dog, bringing the two closer together. This architecture that anyone can make creates a feel-good relationship between humans and dogs.

Architecture for Labrador Retrievers – A meat-shaped wool rug designed for larger dogs that seek freedom as well as comfort: Chinese architect Ma Yansong came up with this idea after considering the Labrador’s behaviour as well as culinary preferences. The ‘Niku Rug’ (niku is the Japanese word for meat), which comes in three different shapes, mimics the texture of meat and is designed to provide a non-confined yet cosy resting place.

Although the Architecture for Dogs exhibition has ended at , you can still see ‘Niku Rug’ and many other designers’ work at their virtual exhibition page. Link in bio.

Renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has a famous track record of creating impressive structures from sustainable cardboard tubes. Staying true to these roots, and utilising the structural integrity of the material, this example of Papillon-friendly architecture uses paper tubes and soft wires to create organic, flexible structures that the dogs can interact with in a variety of ways.

See ‘Papier Papillon’ and many other of our Architecture for Dogs designs at Japan House London’s virtual exhibition site. Link in bio.

No matter the weather, this mobile doghouse is designed to provide dogs like Shiba Inu with a comfortable shelter.

Famous Japanese architect Itō Toyo developed the idea for the design ‘Doghouse for walks’ considering adverse circumstances that may prevent a dog from going outside: rain, heat, age, or injury. The result is a wooden basket that is easily accessible, well ventilated and provides an aesthetic that humans can appreciate inside and outside the home.
