What is organic engagement?
It’s your dog choosing to check in with you, not because you have asked them to watch, or look, or recall to you, but just because they want to know where you are.
This didn’t happen all on its own. At one time Obi would have been very much focussed on the environment, other dogs, birds, squirrels and so on, but we worked hard on our relationship rather than just ‘obedience’ and this is the result. A dog I can trust off lead on a (quiet!) road in a brand new place with sheep fields either side of us.
If you are struggling to get your dog to engage with you, consider little things like how you start your walks. You can make one small change today which will have a big impact - when you leave the house or exit the car does your dog look to you or do they just set off for ‘their’ walk? Wait for eye contact every time, and reward that - the act of setting off on your walk can be reward in itself, but you can absolutely add praise, treats etc too - and make walks a thing you do together. Reward any organic engagement you get during your walk as well - again you can use verbal praise, treats, a game with their favourite toy - and it will happen more and more often, and you will see your relationship change for the better ❤️

Wolfie can be wary of strangers, especially strangers approaching his family. This can be a difficult thing to work on, so his humans booked in for a Walk, Talk & Train and we hit a busy Coals Drops Yard where I asked lots of wonderful strangers to help us help Wolfie to practice this, and all said yes! We even met a couple of people who owned reactive dogs themselves and were especially happy to help. We practiced Wolfie approaching strangers, strangers approaching him, advocating for him, as well as letting him know that he could step down from his guarding duties. Thank you wonderful Londoners - and visitors - and huge well done to Wolfie’s people 😊

Walk, Talk & Trains are perfect for working through real world challenges alongside your dog. We head to wherever you may be finding things tricky - be that your local park, or a more busy urban environment, and together we look at how best to deal with various situations in real time. So many wins on today’s social walk! A couple of first timers smashing it, and good choice after good choice from the regulars, particularly given narrow paths, horses, dogs, joggers, cyclists . . . Real world practice with the most supportive group ❤️

What a fab neutral walk group this morning - new faces settled in so well and the dogs did brilliantly walking at close quarters, as well as trying out some exercises to boost human and canine confidence. Well done everyone!

Adventure walks are currently fully booked but if you are interested in a weekly or ad hoc place for your pup,
drop me a message and I can keep you posted as and when places become available.

** Walks are generally 9:30-12:30, or 12-3, depending on the day, which allows us to head out of the city for our adventures. I will need to have worked with your dog to assess their fit for a group, so please feel free to book in a 1:1 if I don’t know them already 🐾 **

Sunshine, good vibes social walk Sunday with the best bunch of dogs and people today. We had big, small, old and young, with all the different levels of energy that brings. Hats off to this gang for always showing up with so much support, so much hard work, so much progress 💪

This was a really special one for me. No one likes to see a dog stressed to the level Nori was when we began working together, but by avoiding their triggers, we don’t give our dogs the chance to work through their feelings, build their resilience and confidence, and change their mindsets.

A recently adopted ex racer, moving from countryside kennels to the big city, he was feeling really overwhelmed. He felt safe with his new owners, but had begun to have quite extreme reactions to being approached by anyone else wanting to clip on his lead. Obviously this put huge pressure on them as they needed people to be able to come and take him for walks, so we booked in regular sessions to help change his mindset. Their friends and his walker are now able to pop on his lead and head out with no fuss, and we will continue to work at getting more and more positive reps in so he can continue to progress.

Nori’s humans are a wonderful example of owners who want more for their dog, and he is a very brave boy who was able to work through his big feelings and realise the world isn’t as scary as he may once have thought 🖤
