Diabetic Remission Clinic

Diabetic Remission Clinic The RVC Diabetic Remission Clinic investigates the optimum methods to achieve good diabetic control, We welcome enquiries about potential cases.

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) Diabetic Remission Clinic is based in the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals in Hertfordshire. Diabetes mellitus in pets is a costly, chronic disease which can significantly decrease the quality of life of both cat owners and their pets. However, a proportion of diabetic cats can achieve diabetic remission and no longer require insulin therapy. Achieving diabetic

remission is increasingly considered the ultimate goal in treating diabetc cats. Early evidence suggests that good, early blood glucose control increases remission rates in diabetic cats. However, there is little evidence about which treatment protocol offers that best blood glucose control and chance of remission. The Diabetic Remission Clinic aims to investigate the best treatments to promote good diabetic control, and remission, in diabetic pets. Cats seen through our clinic benefit from financial incentives and diabetic management from dedicated Internal Medicine Specialists, while contributing to our knowledge on the best treatment methods for pet diabetes. We are currently recruiting for a clinical trial examining the effect of a newly developed diet to improve glucose control and remission rate in cats who have had diabetes for less than 2 years' duration or cats which have gone into remission already. Enrolled cats qualify for full underlying disease assessment at our referral hospital, several re-examination appointments, 12 months of prescription diabetic food, home glucometers and glucose testing strips – all at no cost to owners! We are delighted to announce that the 12-week results from our Reglucat trial have been published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine! Cats who were fed our test diet at a reduced calorie allowance had a 2.1 times greater chance of diabetic remission during over a 12 week period than those fed the same diet at maintenance.

This trial would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the teams at The Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of Copenhagen, Royal Canin, Clinical Investigation Centre - RVC and, of course, our wonderful participating cats and owners! Thank you to everyone who contributed. There are a lot of findings still to come out of this study and we're looking forward to sharing them in the near future!
