The Henry Nowak case has struck a chord with so many people because it highlights a fear that many of us have experienced firsthand — what happens when the police make up their minds before establishing the facts.
The footage of a dying young man repeatedly saying he had been stabbed, only to be treated as a suspect, has shocked the nation. Hampshire Police have apologised and an independent investigation is underway.
At SalliPets Dog Rescue, we understand the frustration and helplessness that can come from feeling unheard, disbelieved, or wrongly targeted by those in authority. For more than a decade we have raised concerns about our own experiences with Surrey Police and the impact those actions have had on our rescue, our volunteers and the animals we help.
This is not about race. It is not about politics. It is about accountability.
When public bodies get things wrong, people deserve to be listened to. When mistakes are made, they should be acknowledged. And when lives are affected, there must be transparency.
Henry Nowak deserved better. Every member of the public deserves fair and impartial treatment. That should never be controversial.
