๐Ÿ’ Half monkey, half cat? Almost! Meet Gato, a margay and one of the most extraordinary climbers in the feline world! ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿพ Margays (Leopardus wiedii), unlike most cats, can rotate their hind feet by an incredible 180ยฐ (!), allowing them to climb down trees headfirst, just like squirrels! ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ

๐Ÿพ They're amazing jumpers, capable of leaping up to 2.5 metres vertically and 3.7 metres horizontally! They can even hang upside down using just their hind feet!

๐Ÿพ Their long tails help them balance, while their broad paws, flexible toes and sharp claws provide an excellent grip.

๐Ÿพ AND as if all that wasn't impressive enough, margays have exceptionally large eyes relative to their heads, giving them excellent night vision. Combined with their incredible jumping and climbing abilities, this makes them highly skilled nocturnal hunters, capable of pursuing prey through the treetops in the dark! ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ†

So, while Gato might look like he's practising his monkey moves, he's actually showing off some pretty impressive natural wild cat skills! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ†โค๏ธ

Ocelots aren't "pets". ๐Ÿ†

Meet Chiquilin, an ocelot who might look cute and cuddly, but don't let appearances fool you! Behind that adorable face is a wild animal with natural instincts, behaviours and needs that no amount of human affection can change. Chiquilin isn't being naughty or vicious. He's simply being an ocelot. ๐Ÿพ

And that's something we often forget when looking at wild animals. Just because they're cute, playful or comfortable around humans doesn't mean they're domesticated or suited to life as pets. ๐Ÿพ

Sadly, their beauty and charm are often exactly what makes them victims of the exotic pet trade, with some spending their entire lives confined to cages. ๐Ÿพ

Wild animals don't exist for our entertainment or companionship. They belong in their natural habitats, where they can express their natural behaviours and live as nature intended. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

P.S. The clip shows a playful interaction with Chiquilin as part of his daily enrichment and exercise routine.

Meet Padhum, a magnificent jaguar living at Selva Teenek! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿพ

Sadly, Padhum can't be released back into the wild because she's had too much contact with humans since she was a cub. Her story is yet another reminder that jaguars are wild animals, not pets.

Keeping them as pets doesn't just compromise their welfare; it can also rob them of the chance to live freely in the wild, where they truly belong.

For wild felines living in captivity, just like for domestic cats, enrichment plays a vital role in their wellbeing, encouraging natural behaviours, providing stimulation and helping prevent boredom and frustration.

One of my main reasons for coming to Selva Teenek was to help provide enrichment for the centre's permanent residents and put the skills I've developed as a cat sitter to use on a, wellโ€ฆ slightly larger scale! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ˜น

While I'm here, I'm creating DIY toys using natural materials such as palm fibres, rope and bamboo.

Stay tuned for more updates on the feline residents and all the other amazing wildlife at the rescue centre! ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

I was meant to post this tribute a while back, but quite frankly, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to do it.

Two months ago, one of my cat clients, Talul, was found dead by one of the neighbours.

I had been looking after Talul for a few years; in fact, he was one of my first clients. Talul was the sweetest, gentlest cat anyone could imagine. He was also playful and cuddly, and yes, he had only one eye, so I called him One-Eyed Bandito. He was literally the most perfect cat, and over time he became my cat pal. I couldnโ€™t wait to cat sit for him each time his guardian went on holiday.

The death of a cat client while under your care is, without a doubt, one of the worst things a cat sitter can experience. I canโ€™t even begin to describe how shocked I was to learn about his sudden death, how much I dreaded informing his guardian and, finally, how much strength I had to muster that day and carry on with my other cat visits, as it was a busy summer. I am still grieving the loss of my cat Ryshia, who passed away back in December, and Talulโ€™s death added to the sadness I am still processing.

I would like to thank his guardian here for trusting me with Talul over the past few years. He was a very precious cat, and I am grateful that I had the privilege of looking after him.

Talul, you are missed dearly every day. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค
