Routine provides structure and predictability.
For dogs experiencing cognitive changes, familiar daily patterns can help reduce stress and make their environment feel more manageable.
Simple things such as:
🐾 Consistent feeding times
🐾 Familiar walking routes
🐾 Predictable daily routines
Can all provide reassurance, reduce anxiety and support confidence.
You will find that small adjustments are often easier than major changes.

As dogs age, some changes are expected. However, confusion, disorientation and altered sleep patterns are not simply "old age".
Some dogs become lost in familiar places or appear unsure of their surroundings. While others may forget routines or become less interested in social interaction. These are all signs of Canine Dementia.
If you notice changes, speak with your vet so they can ensure your dog receives the appropriate support.

This month we'll be looking at canine dementia and cognitive change, a subject that is very close to my heart.
My 16-year-old Cockapoo, Milly, experienced canine dementia towards the end of her life. It was heartbreaking to see the changes in her, particularly as there were times when she no longer seemed to recognise me.
Living through that experience gave me a very personal understanding of how difficult cognitive change can be, both for the dog and for their owners.
Throughout October, I'll be looking at some of the signs of canine dementia, why familiar routines can be important, ways we can adapt the home environment and, most importantly, how we can continue to support a dog's comfort and quality of life as things change.
Every dog's experience is different, but recognising changes early and understanding what your dog may be experiencing can help us provide the right support.

One thing I encourage owners to do, is to watch their dog and learn what their dog's "normal" is.
Knowing what is typical for your dog makes it easier to notice changes and seek advice when needed 🩷

Exercise is an important part of many dogs' lives, but recovery is equally important.
Rest allows the body time to adapt after activity.
Recovery needs vary depending on the dog and the activity.
Water, rest and appropriate nutrition all support wellbeing.
Watching how your dog responds after activity can provide useful insight into their comfort and fitness.
