The hot weather is predicted to continue perhaps until the end of this month.
This is no longer a "heatwave", this is just a long, very hot summer!
When the temperatures dropped the last time, they only dropped to around 24-25C peak heat. Then it quickly rose. We had been used to 30-38 degrees Celsius!
This made 25 seem alright (not for me but for some) to some people.
However, please know that even though you may feel climatised and feel 25C is OK to be out - it IS STILL TOO HOT FOR MOST DOGS!
It is true that some dogs tolerate higher temperatures than others.
It's also true that some dogs tolerate FAR LOWER temperatures than most.
Also, how you walk, whether it is sunny, windy or humid ALSO makes a difference.
The temperature is the average in the SHADE. It is not the temperature in the sun which is far hotter and it doesn't account for hot and cool spots.
Being in shade, under trees with grass rather than heat-reflecting hard surfaces helps stay cool.
Being very active makes you hotter also.
So please, when it comes the time that temperatures reduce to a more normal British summer temperature, please don't go rushing out with your dog at 2pm or taking them on day trips to outside events or on stuffy public transport.
Most of the summer in London between late May and early September it is still advisable to reduce activity (e.g. not too much running), stick to shade, keep the house as cool as possible and do walks as early and late as possible when temperatures are lower and there is more shade.
Always have water available indoors and when you're out for your dog (and of course yourself).
Don't force your dog to walk if they're telling you they don't want to - they're probably telling you it's too hot!
Yes, dogs get hotter than we do. I know some large, dark dogs that if it is sunny, cannot tolerate 19C for very long!
Large dogs, dark dogs, flat-faced dogs, old and very young dogs and definitely pregnant dogs or females in season can really suffer in the heat and get heatstroke faster than others.
So please, still be careful.
Thank you
