Keeping Your Indoor Cat Cool This Heatwave ๐ฑ๐
While our feline friends love finding a sunny spot to snooze, extreme temperatures can quickly become dangerous. Here are some simple ways to help keep your indoor cat safe and comfortable during the warmer weather...
๐ก Keep your home cool.
โ๏ธ Close blinds and curtains in sunny rooms during the hottest part of the day.
๐ช Keep windows closed while it's hottest outside, then open them in the evening to let cooler air circulate. Always make sure windows are secure to prevent escapes.
๐ Use a fan to keep the air moving but avoid pointing it directly at your cat.
๐ซ Keep cats out of conservatories and other rooms that heat up quickly in direct sunlight.
๐ง Encourage hydration.
๐ฅฃ Place several bowls of fresh water around the house and top them up regularly.
๐ฆ A pet water fountain can encourage cats to drink more, as many prefer running water.
๐ You can also tempt fussy drinkers with a small splash of tuna water (in spring water, not brine) or by mixing a Lick-e-Lix into their water.
โ๏ธ Help them stay cool.
๐ง Provide cool places to rest, such as tiled floors, damp towels or a cooling mat. A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel also makes a great DIY cooling aid.
๐ฆ Freeze their favourite liquid treats into small portions for a refreshing snack.
๐พ Gently dampen their paws and the outside of their ears with cool (not ice-cold) water to help them cool down.
๐ชฎ Brush your cat daily to remove loose fur and help their coat regulate body temperature more effectively.
โ ๏ธ Know the signs of heatstroke
If your cat is panting, drooling excessively, breathing rapidly, seems weak or lethargic, is vomiting, or collapses, move them to a cool area, offer water if they're able to drink, and contact Arc Vets immediately for advice.
Stay safe, stay cool, and give your feline friends a little extra TLC during the heatwave. ๐๐พ
