I had one to ones with these two absolutely gorgeous young dogs recently.

Nigel is an absolutely gorgeous German Shepherd mix (with the most amazing ears) and Daisy is a beautiful Staffie mix.

I thought I would post these two together because both of their owners contacted me due to having the same training issues. Which were pulling on lead, getting over excited when seeing other dogs and recall.

As always I started the sessions off by doing some training with both of these dogs myself.
This is something I like doing because it gives me a much clearer picture of what is going on, how to resolve issues and what potential a dog has.
Not every dog is the same so sometimes I do have to adapt the training in order to make sure every dog succeeds.

Nigel and Stella are absolute superstars, they are amazing dogs that are very intelligent and super quick to learn.
However when you have a dog that is very intelligent and quick to learn, it can often be why issues arise.

This is because dogs are learning whether or not we are actively teaching them. So the wrong things can easily be accidentally reinforced, especially with a dog that is very intelligent and quick to learn. It may be that something happened only once, but that once can be enough for a dog to learn and repeat the wrong things.
For example if a dog learns that pulling on the lead is a successful behaviour .. then they will then keep repeating that behaviour.

So for both of these two beautiful dogs it was a case of going back to basics and re going over their training. It was also important that their owners understand why these behaviours most likely started. As part of resolving training issues is understanding how and why they happened to begin with.

We also have to remember that a dog is not giving us a hard time on purpose, they are only acting off the information and training that we are, or are not giving them. So it is imperative that we teach them the behaviours that we do want and make sure that they are rewarding and successful.
We also must make sure we are not accidentally reinforcing the wrong things, are consistent with their training, make sure all communication is clear and always set our dogs up to succeed.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to work with these two wonderful dogs and their owners. Very quickly they were walking nicely at heel, more focused and engaged with their owners, as well as being calmer and ignoring other dogs.

🐾 PET GUNDOG ETIQUETTE 101: You don’t need to say hello 🐾

Your dog sees another dog.

They don’t need to meet it.

They don’t need to play with it.

And they certainly don’t need to charge across a field towards it because they’re “friendly”.

One of my favourite skills in a pet gundog is neutrality.

See the dog.

Acknowledge the dog.

Carry on with your day.

If somebody is training their dog, has called them into heel or is clearly trying to create some distance, give them the space they’re asking for.

Being sociable doesn’t mean interacting with everyone.

Sometimes excellent social skills look wonderfully boring.

“I saw you. You saw me. We both carried on walking.”

Well it was sunny again today, although a bit chilly but I’m still so grateful for the nicer weather, especially after yesterdays rather wet and cold weather 🤣.

I don’t know about everyone else but I’m getting a bit fed up of playing ‘guess what the weather will end up like today’! 🤦‍♀️

However no matter the weather, I always know that I am in for a wonderful time with my K9 best friends. From the youngest (Ludo) who is almost 6 months old, to the oldest (Milo) at 13yrs old every day is an adventure full of happiness. ❤️

DISTRACTED DOG WALKERS

The distracted dog walker is commonly seen chatting on the cell phone, wearing headphones or socializing, while oblivious to what their dog is doing, how their dog is feeling or what is going on in the environment.

This may not sound like a problem, but it is something that many of us have a problem with, even more so if we have a reactive, sensitive dog.

I always compare walking a dog to driving a car. It’s not so much about our driving skills, but having to constantly be aware of the driving skills of others – trying to predict what they will do, which rules of the road they will ignore and how distracted they are. This is especially true in the country I live in, where driving can be a really stressful experience.

I understand that we often need to multi task – there simply doesn’t seem to be enough time in our day to accomplish everything we need to, but walking our dogs should not be one of these times.

“But my dog is really friendly, well socialized, gets on well with everyone, is well trained, knows this environment well etc. and I hear that. But another dog might not be – maybe they need space, are reactive, sensitive, selectively social, have health issues, might be terrified of another dog racing straight towards them chasing a ball thrown from a ball launcher etc.

If distracted dog walkers have no regard for other dogs or other people, they should at least have regard for their own dogs.

Walking your dog should be a time of bonding, of connecting, of seeing the world through their eyes, of reinforcing and rewarding wanted behaviours, of keeping them safe and protected, of being truly present in the moments.

It’s Mon-yay!!!

What a lovely sunny day it has been today, good weather at the start of the week always makes a huge difference after the weekend.

It most definitely always gives me and the dogs a lovely extra boost.
Not that they need a boost of any kind!! 🤦‍♀️🤣.
