Christina joined our team earlier this summer as a Multi-Disciplinary RVN 🩵 Christina studied at Middlesex University, in partnership with The College of Animal Welfare, graduating in 2025 with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing. After graduating, Christina worked in a busy 24-hour referral hospital in Athens, Greece, where she supported a wide range of complex emergency and referral cases.

Through her role at LVS, Christina will rotate through our specialist-led services, where she is eager to continue developing her skills across all areas, with a particular interest in surgical theatre nursing and internal medicine.

At LVS, we welcome learning and development opportunities for our team, through our close work with partnering hospitals and companies. Last week, we were delighted to host our Arthrex representative team for a morning of interactive learning with our intern and orthopaedic nursing team, allowing them hands-on experience with suture anchor kits, as well as a walk through of our brand new NanoNeedle system, complete with fruit demonstration! 🍓🍊

The NanoNeedle scope system is a full portable console, that offers minimally invasive means to diagnose common orthopaedic conditions 🦴 The camera, being just 1.9mm in diameter, allows surgeons to easily visualise the internal structures of joints, primarily the elbow and stifle joints. Unlike arthrotomies, where the joint is surgically opened for examination, this method reduces trauma to the area and offers a lower risk of infection.

We are delighted to continue offering advanced care to our orthopaedic patients, with thanks to the wonderful Arthrex team for a fun and educational morning!

🤩 RVN Development In Action 🤩

Our fantastic Anaesthesia-Focused RVN Soula recently placed her first central line 🎉 A central line is a long-stay venous catheter, typically inserted into the jugular vein in the neck, rather than a peripheral vein such as the cephalic and saphenous veins that we typically utilise in our patient's legs. This procedure requires a more advanced skillset than peripheral IV catheter placement, with the benefit of allowing us to have continued venous access during a patient's hospitalisation stay to administer fluids, medications and obtain blood samples 💉

It's wonderful to see Soula advance her skillset through her work at LVS, building on her already strong capabilities as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, guided by our brilliant team of anaesthetists 🙌 Well done Soula!

We are delighted to welcome our second ophthalmologist, Dr Juan Maestro-Fernandez to London Vet Specialists 🎉Juan joins Head of Ophthalmology, Dr Vim Kumaratunga, further strengthening our ophthalmology service and expanding the support we can provide to our referring veterinary practices, patients and clients.

Juan graduated from the University of Las Palmas, Spain in 2017. He worked in primary care practice for one year before completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology and rotating internship at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He then completed an ophthalmology specific internship at IVO, Barcelona, working at Glories Hospital thereafter. Following this, Juan moved to Memvet, Palma de Mallorca, completing his European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) residency training programme in December 2025. He is due to sit his ECVO Board-Certifying examinations in March 2027.

We are excited to see this growth within our ophthalmology service, and look forward to the continued development of the care we offer our patients, clients and referring vet colleagues. Please join us in giving Juan a warm welcome to LVS! 👏

Loki is a 6-year-old Cocker Spaniel who completely stole our hearts during his time at London Vet Specialists🐾

Loki first presented to our Ophthalmology team in May as an emergency referral, following a 5-day history of swelling around his left eye, a reduced appetite and pain when opening his mouth. Loki underwent investigations, including blood tests, ocular ultrasound and a CT scan of his head, to identify the cause of his clinical signs. No cause could be found, though the swelling responded well to treatment and Loki was discharged with a course of antibiotics.

However; 8 weeks later, Loki's discomfort returned. We strongly suspected that a hidden foreign body was the underlying cause and so a repeat CT scan and ocular ultrasound were performed, locating a tiny foreign body above his left eye. Due to its position, it could not be safely accessed using ultrasound guidance and so, following a surgical exploration of the soft tissues above the eye, our team successfully removed the small piece of organic material that had been causing Loki's ongoing pain (pictured). True to form, Loki recovered brilliantly and was even wagging his tail as he woke up from anaesthesia!

Today, he's back at home enjoying adventures in the camper van with his favourite dog walker and spreading joy wherever he goes. Thank you Loki for being such a superstar patient. We were delighted to be part of your journey and wish you many happy, healthy adventures ahead! ❤️

Jessica recently joined LVS as a Multi-Disciplinary RVN, rotating through our specialist-led services. Jessica qualified with a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology in Australia in 2021, starting her career as an Emergency & Critical Care Nurse in a specialised emergency hospital.

In 2024, she took the leap to move to London, where she became a Registered Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS. She took on a senior nursing role at a busy practice, though looking to continue her growth, Jessica has now joined our team. She is particularly passionate about critical care nursing and advanced anaesthesia.

Congratulations to our radiologist, Dr Ana García-Fernández, who recently attended the International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA) Congress in Fukuoka, Japan to present her case study on "Multimodal Diagnostic Imaging Findings of Feline Hypertrophic Muscular Dystrophy" 🐱

She also co-presented the poster "Radiographic and ultrasonographic identification of an intravascular needle in the linguofacial vein of a dog", with our previous Rotating Intern and current Village Vet Hampstead colleague, Dr José Gómez-Silvestre; also co-authored with Soft Tissue Surgeon, Dr Janet Kovak McClaran.

We're incredibly proud to see the achievements of our team, past and present, recognised internationally. Well done to you all 🥳

Dr Íñigo Sanz-Gonzalez joined London Vet Specialists earlier this year as our cardiologist 🫀 He works closely with our cardiology-focused RVN, Niki to provide exceptional care and support for both patients and their families.

After qualifying from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2012, Íñigo moved to the UK to undertake advanced training, including a Master's Degree in Cardiac Biomarkers, a rotating internship and a cardiology residency at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He became a European Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology in 2023.

Íñigo's main interests include cyanotic congenital heart disease, cardiac pacing and arrhythmias in small animals.

We're incredibly fortunate to have Íñigo's expertise and compassion at LVS, where he is a much valued member of our team 🫶

Not our everyday patient! 🐰

Babe is a nearly 5-year-old Mini Lop rabbit that has dabbled in some modeling in the past! She presented to our ophthalmology service last year with a chronic, non-healing corneal ulcer in the right eye, alongside a history of corneal disease in both eyes. She underwent a left conjunctival pedicle graft surgery at LVS with Dr. Vim Kumaratunga at that time, which successfully resolved the left corneal ulceration that she had been suffering with for nearly two years. Her left eye has remained very comfortable and free of painful corneal ulceration since then.

At one of Babe's most recent visits, we performed a diamond burr debridement followed by placement of an amniotic membrane-loaded bandage contact lens, to support healing of the right cornea that was causing discomfort this time. We’re hopeful this latest treatment will support Babe's ongoing ocular concerns and restore her everyday comfort 💙

Rijo is a gorgeous 1-year-and-3-month-old boy who is a familiar face in our Oncology Department, where he receives treatment for his gastrointestinal lymphoma 🧡

Despite his regular visits, Rijo remains an absolute superstar. Armed with his favourite treats; Lick-e-Lix and dried fish cubes, he's often so focused on snack time that he completely forgets we're placing an IV catheter or taking blood samples! 😸🐟

His calm, trusting nature and love of treats make him a dream patient, and he never fails to put a smile on the faces of our team. We're always delighted to see Rijo, and we're cheering him on every step of his treatment journey ⭐
