🍂🐾 AUTUMN ADVENTURES - KEEPING OUR PETS SAFE! 🐾🍂
The leaves are falling, the evenings are getting darker, and autumn is officially here! 🍁🐕🐈
Whilst this beautiful season brings crisp walks, cosy evenings and plenty of muddy paws, it also brings a few hidden dangers for our four-legged friends.
Here at All Creatures Vets, we want to help you keep your pets happy, healthy and safe throughout the autumn months. ❤️
🌰 CONKERS & ACORNS
They might look like harmless little treasures, but conkers and acorns can be toxic to dogs if eaten. They can also cause choking or potentially serious intestinal blockages.
🍄 WILD MUSHROOMS
Not all mushrooms are poisonous, but some can cause serious illness. With so many varieties growing at this time of year, it's safest to prevent your dog from eating any wild mushrooms.
🍫 HALLOWEEN TREATS
With Halloween approaching, remember that chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats. Some sugar-free sweets also contain xylitol, which is extremely dangerous to dogs.
Keep those trick-or-treat goodies well out of paws' reach! 🎃
🌙 DARKER EVENINGS
As the evenings draw in, make sure you and your pets can be seen! Reflective collars, leads and harnesses can make a real difference during those early morning and evening walks.
🐌 SLUGS, SNAILS & LUNGWORM
Autumn's damp conditions can mean more slugs and snails.
Dogs can become infected with lungworm through accidentally swallowing infected slugs or snails.
Not all routine worming treatments protect against lungworm, so speak to our team about appropriate preventative treatment.
🐱 A LITTLE EXTRA CARE FOR OUR CATS
As the weather becomes cooler, cats may seek warmth in sheds, garages or even around car engines.
Always check before starting your car and ensure your cat has somewhere warm, dry and safe to rest.
🐰🐹 RABBITS & GUINEA PIGS - AUTUMN CARE
Our smaller furry friends need a little extra TLC as the temperatures begin to drop! ❤️
🍂 Warm, dry shelter: Ensure outdoor accommodation is weatherproof, well ventilated and protected from wind and rain, with plenty of clean, dry bedding.
🌿 Keep that hay coming! Unlimited good-quality hay is essential for healthy digestion and dental health.
🐾 Monitor their appetite and droppings: Rabbits and guinea pigs have delicate digestive systems. Eating less or producing fewer droppings can be an early warning sign of serious illness, including gastrointestinal (GI) stasis.
🚨 IMPORTANT: If your rabbit or guinea pig stops eating or passing droppings, contact your vet immediately. This is a veterinary emergency and should never be left until the following day.
❤️ WHEN SHOULD YOU CONTACT YOUR VET?
If your pet has eaten something potentially harmful, please contact your veterinary practice promptly, even if they appear perfectly well.
Don't wait for symptoms to develop, and never attempt to make your pet sick unless specifically instructed by a veterinary professional.
