๐พ Meet Barkley โ a new lease of life! ๐
Weโd love you to meet Barkley, our very special 4-year-old Dachshund, whose incredible journey is a wonderful reminder of just how important maintaining a healthy weight is for our pets. ๐ถโจ
When Barkley was rehomed by our RVN Kayleigh on 28th January 2026, he was suffering from severe obesity. Sadly, over time, his weight had contributed to a devastating chain of problems. Barkley had become paralysed, incontinent, developed a skin infection and suffered from painful urine scalding.
At just four years old, Barkley was incredibly uncomfortable and had a long road ahead of him.
His previous owners were unable to provide the strict weight-management programme and specialist treatment he needed, so Kayleigh made the incredibly compassionate decision to give Barkley a new home and the chance he deserved. โค๏ธ
โ๏ธ The journey beganโฆ
Barkley was immediately started on a strict weight-loss programme โ much to his disgust! ๐ โ while Kayleigh arranged his referral for spinal surgery.
Barkley underwent a hemilaminectomy, which thankfully went well. But surgery was only the beginning. He then faced a long recovery, rehabilitation and, most importantly, a significant weight-loss journey.
Fast forward to today, and look at him now! ๐ฅน๐พ
๐ Barkley has lost an incredible 10.8kg! ๐
He has regained his mobility and now enjoys daily walks with his sisters, as well as regular hydrotherapy to help build muscle, improve his strength and keep working towards a healthier body condition.
Kayleigh and her mum have put an enormous amount of love, time and dedication into Barkleyโs recovery โ and their hard work has truly paid off. ๐
We are incredibly proud of Kayleigh and Barkley! ๐๐ถ
โค๏ธ Why does your petโs weight matter?
Obesity isnโt simply a cosmetic issue. Carrying excess weight can have a serious impact on a petโs joints, spine, mobility, breathing, heart and overall quality of life. It can also make existing conditions more difficult to manage and increase the risk of further health problems.
The good news? Itโs never too late to start. ๐พ
Every pet is different, which is why a personalised weight-loss plan can make all the difference. Our nurses can assess your dog or cat, help you understand their ideal weight and body condition, and work with you to create a safe, achievable weight-loss journey.
