🐛Flystrike is condition that affects small animals - especially rabbits, and occurs when flies lay their eggs on soiled skin
The eggs hatch into maggots that burrow into the skin, causing pain, infection and sever damage
It is most common in the warmer weather

Who Is at Risk?
Flystrike is most common during warm, damp weather. Flies (typically blowflies or greenbottles) are strongly drawn to warm, moist environments.

🐾 Soiled fur or rear ends: Animals that cannot clean themselves properly or have diarrhoea are highly vulnerable.
🐾Wounds: Open cuts, sores, or skin lesions are prime targets.
Ill or elderly animals: Pets that are weakened, immobile, or obese struggle to groom and are at greater risk.

Warning Signs
❗Visible eggs or maggots: Small white clusters of eggs or actively moving maggots in the fur or on the skin.
❗Foul odour: A strong, unusual smell radiating from the pet.
❗Behavioural changes: Agitation, restlessness, or unusual biting, scratching, or licking at the affected area.
❗Lethargy: Severe cases can lead to shock, collapse, or a drop in body temperature.

Prevention
💚 Regular checks: Inspect your animal’s fur and rear end daily, especially during warmer months.
💚 Good hygiene: Keep living areas clean, dry, and free of soiled bedding or uneaten food that attracts flies.
💚 Weight and diet management: Ensure animals are kept at a healthy weight and on a proper diet so they can groom themselves properly.
💚Veterinary products: Ask us about preventative sprays or treatments.

This gorgeous boy is Fergus 💚
Fergus had been limping due to a very sore foot
Our wonderful vet Niamh had a close look and discovered a small hole in his paw and a piece of stone/grit was lodged deep in his paw pad 😟
Niamh removed the offending foreign body and gave the hole a good clean
Fergus has gone home with some painkillers and is already feeling much better 🥰

Hot Weather Alert for Pet Owners! 🐾
As we head into what is likely to be a very hot bank holiday weekend, it's important to remember that our dogs feel the heat even more than we do. What might seem like a pleasant summer walk can quickly turn dangerous—or even deadly—for your furry friend.
🔥 Why It’s Risky:
Pavement burns: If the ground is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Asphalt can reach 130°F (54°C) or more on a 90°F (32°C) day.
Heatstroke: Dogs can't sweat like we do. They cool down by panting, which isn't enough in extreme heat. Heatstroke can come on fast and can be fatal.
Dehydration: Long walks in the sun increase the risk of dehydration, especially for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs.
🚫 Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day (typically 10 AM – 6 PM). Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the pavement and air are cooler.
✅ Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:
Walk on grass when possible
Always bring water
Keep walks short
Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a minute
Watch for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or vomiting
Your dog relies on you to keep them safe—let’s make sure summer is fun, not fatal. 🐶💛

We were lucky today to have a visit from the beautiful Lola 💚
Lola has been a few different issues, and today we were looking at her eye
She has an ulcer on her cornea 😟
This is a painful open sore on the clear surface of a dog’s eye, typically caused by trauma, foreign objects, or underlying conditions like dry eye
We have started on some medication and we will monitor her closely going forwards 🥰

This teeny little friend (named Roland by the team), was found by a kind member of the public and brought to us for help 🥰
Every little one deserves a chance, whether it be owned, stray, domestic or wildlife 🐾
This little baby rat (we think) is very lively and has been checked by our lovely exotics vet Ellie at our Epsom clinic. He is in good shape other then having some mites 😟
We have applied some treatment for this and the incredible Wildlife Aid in Leatherhead have offered to take him in
He will be assessed, and steps taken to get him back out into the wild

Good luck little one 💚

This stunning little pair is Coco and Missy 🥰
The British Shorthair is a medium-to-large, muscular cat famous for its chunky build, plush, dense coat, and round, teddy-bear-like face. They are easy going, loyal, and affectionate companions that get along well with families and other pets
These little girls came to see our lovely vet Adam for their routine neutering procedure and were a joy to have with us 💚

This little sweetheart is Mingus 🥰
Mingus was referred to our incredible imaging vet Viraf from our Streatham Hill hospital for some scans
This poor lad has a lot going on and has a heart murmur, a gall bladder condition, kidney/bladder stones and diabetes!!
Enough for three dogs 😯
However this little champ takes it all in his stride and all of his conditions are well managed and under control 💚
We will continue to monitor this lovely boy going forwards 🐾
