Fireworks season has started early round here, and for a lot of dogs it's the most stressful time of the year. 🎆

A few things really help. Set up a cosy den now, somewhere quiet with a blanket over the top, so it already feels safe before the bangs start. Walk your dog before it gets dark, close the curtains, and put the TV or radio on to soften the noise. If they want to hide, let them.

If your dog really struggled last year, please book in to see us now rather than waiting until Bonfire Night. There's a lot we can do to help, but it works best when we start early. 💜

Meet Billy 🐾

Billy came in to be neutered and spent the day purring loudly and collecting attention from everyone in the building. A very affectionate, very confident boy.

Neutering your male cat means no unwanted litters, less roaming and fighting, and usually less spraying around the house. Most cats are back to their normal selves within a day or two.

If your rabbits live outside, now is the time to get their hutch ready for winter. 🐰

Rabbits cope well with the cold, but wet and draughts are a different story. Move the hutch somewhere sheltered and off the ground if you can, cover the front at night, and give them plenty of dry hay to burrow into. On frosty mornings, check their water hasn't frozen.

With darker evenings it's easy to see less of them, so keep an eye on whether they're eating and producing droppings every day. A rabbit that stops doing either needs to be seen the same day, so please ring us straight away.

Autumn walks mean wet ears, and for dogs with long, floppy ears that can lead to problems. 🍂

Ears like these trap warmth and moisture, which is exactly what yeast and bacteria need to cause an infection. Gently drying the ears with a towel after a wet walk really does help.

It's time to bring them in if they're shaking their head a lot, scratching at one ear, or there's a smell or redness, or they don't want their ears touched. Please avoid cotton buds, as they push things further down the ear.

Simba came in for his very first visit with us last week, and he took the whole thing in his stride.

A kitten's first appointment is a chance for us to give them a proper once-over, talk you through vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and neutering, and answer all the questions that come with a new kitten. There's no such thing as a silly one.

Two months old, a Cocker Spaniel, and in with us for his first vaccinations.

The first appointment is about a lot more than the injection. We check him over nose to tail, weigh him, and talk through worming, fleas and the rest of the vaccination course, so you leave knowing exactly what's next.

Three months old and in with us for his vaccinations.

The question every new puppy owner asks is when he can go out. It depends on which vaccine is used, so we give you the exact date at the appointment rather than a rule of thumb from the internet. It's usually a week or two after the second injection.

That doesn't mean he stays indoors until then. Carry him out to see traffic, people, other dogs at a distance and the odd bus. The weeks before he can walk the streets are some of the most useful for getting him used to them.

Meet Beatriz. 🐾

Beatriz came in for a blood pressure check. It was a busy day, so Marina, our practice manager, was drafted in on cuddle and chin-scratch duty to keep her sitting still. Beatriz was very good about the whole thing.

We take cats' blood pressure from the tail. Most cats find it far more comfortable than the leg, and plenty of them just relax while we get on with it. It's an inflatable cuff and a small ultrasound probe that listens for the pulse. Nothing invasive, though it takes a fair bit of skill to make it look this easy.

The useful bit: high blood pressure is common in older cats, particularly those with kidney or thyroid problems, and it rarely shows until it has already done damage, often to the eyes. If your cat is getting on a bit, ask us about a check at their next visit.

Today is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day, so a word for the people who pick up the phone. ☎️

They take the call when your dog has eaten something he absolutely should not have. They find you an appointment when the day is already full. They hold the door, carry the carrier, and know which of our regulars gets a biscuit and which one wants to go straight home.

None of the clinical work happens until they have got you through the door first.
