Can you see what we’re pointing to? 👀
That’s the coat pulling tightly on the dogs skin…. OUCH!
Now look at the colour difference between the top coat and what’s underneath. That darker coat is trapped dirt, grease and yucky stuff sitting right against the skin.
Severe matting can:
• pull painfully on the skin
• restrict movement
• trap dirt, moisture and debris
• create the perfect environment for sores, fleas and other skin problems
• hide ticks and skin issues underneath
• prevent the coat from doing its job properly
The tricky part? The top can still look fluffy and feel brushed. 😬
Once matting reaches this stage, we physically cannot safely get a blade through the coat to preserve the length. The kindest option is to clip underneath the matting and start again.
This is also why severe matting carries an additional fee. It requires extra time, specialist handling and can cause significant wear and damage to our equipment.
