🐾 Ritzi’s case of pyometra 🐾

Ritzi came to see us on Monday after becoming lethargic and developing a very swollen tummy. An ultrasound scan confirmed she had a pyometra – a serious infection of the uterus where it fills with pus. Without prompt treatment, it can quickly become life-threatening.

Ritzi underwent emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus, which had expanded to over 10x its normal size, and we’re delighted to say she’s recovering really well! 💙

If your female dog is unneutered, keep an eye out for:
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite
• Drinking more than usual
• Vomiting
• A swollen abdomen
• Vaginal discharge (although this isn’t always present)

If you notice any of these signs, please contact your vet as soon as possible. Early treatment can be lifesaving. 🩺🐶

🌾 It’s officially grass seed season! 🌾

This lovely girl Maggie popped in today because she had a sore paw, and what did we find? That’s right! A grass seed! And she’s definitely not the only one - we’ve been seeing them in paws and ears every day this week! 🐾

These seeds can easily work their way into the skin or ears and cause irritation, pain, and infection if left unnoticed. After walks, it’s a good idea to check between toes, around ears, and through longer fur.

If your dog is suddenly licking a paw, shaking their head, or seems uncomfortable, it may be worth getting them checked.

Thanks for being our grass-seed awareness ambassador today, Maggie 💚🐶

With the hot weather hitting the UK this week, it’s a good time to remember that heatstroke can happen fast.

Watch for excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, disorientation or collapse, and seek veterinary advice immediately if you’re concerned.

Always remember:
💧 Fresh water
🌳 Shade
🌅 Cooler walks
🚗 Never leave pets in cars

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly!

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰?

Michael Gordon purchased Bayswater Referral Clinic in 1967 and has remained the sole owner ever since. Although he retired 7 years ago, he is still actively involved in the day-to-day running of the clinic, providing over 65 years of experience to the industry.

The other Michael, who many of you will recognise as a familiar face, is our Head Vet and has been part of the clinic for over 4 years.

Alongside our GP team, we are proud to have specialists in medicine, ophthalmology, and dermatology on site, supported by our experienced and super nursing team!

We are proud to remain 100% independently owned and run. That means every decision is made with our patients, clients, and team in mind - not shareholders.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in us 🐾

🚨 Important Pet Travel Update (UK ➡️ EU) – From Tomorrow (22 April 2026) 🚨

Planning to travel to the EU with your pet? Big changes are coming into effect that you NEED to know!

‘Key updates include:

GB residents should no longer use EU pet passports to travel into the EU. EU pet passports may now only be issued to people whose main home is in the EU and should not be used by people who have holiday homes in the EU or visit seasonally. EU pet passports issued to GB residents before 22 April 2026 may no longer be valid documents for entry to the EU. This means GB residents – even if they already have an EU pet passport – may need a different document to take their pet to the EU. To guarantee smooth travel, owners resident in Great Britain should get an Animal Health Certificate for their dog, cat or ferret(s) if they’re travelling from Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) to an EU country.‘

❌ EU Pet Passports are no longer valid for UK (Great Britain) residents travelling to the EU
➡️ Even if your passport was issued in the EU or Northern Ireland

✅ What you now need instead:
📄 An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for every trip

📌 Key things to remember:
• AHCs must be issued by an Official Veterinarian
• Must be done within 10 days of travel
• Valid for one trip only (not reusable)
• Your pet must be microchipped
• Must have a rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel)

💡 There are no changes for returning to the UK
