Keeping Pets Cool in the Heat — Tips & Hacks from Triage Vets!🐾 🐱☀️💦🐶
When temperatures rise, our furry friends feel it even more. Dogs and cats can’t sweat like we do, so it’s up to us to help them stay safe and comfortable. Here’s how to beat the heat:
🌊 Hydration is everything— Keep fresh, cool water available at all times. Add ice cubes to their bowl or use a pet fountain to encourage drinking.
🏡 Create cool zones— Set up shaded areas indoors and outdoors. Cooling mats, damp towels, or a fan near their favourite spot can make a big difference.
🚶♀️ Walk smart— Stick to early mornings or late evenings when pavements are cooler. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
🚗 Never leave pets in cars— Even with windows cracked, temperatures can soar dangerously within minutes.
🧊DIY cooling treats— Freeze pet-safe snacks like chicken broth ice cubes, watermelon chunks (seedless), or frozen yoghurt drops for a refreshing reward.
🐕Groom wisely— Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and improve airflow. Avoid shaving double-coated breeds — their fur actually protects them from heat.
🩺 Know the warning signs— Excessive panting, drooling, red gums, weakness, vomiting, or collapse mean it’s time to act fast. Move them to a cool area, offer water, and call your vet immediately.
