Hackney City Farm provides the opportunity for children and the local community to experience farming

For Nearly 30 years, Hackney City Farm has been giving the local community the opportunity to experience farming right in the heart of the city. It offers an opportunity for children and adults to get up close to a range of farmyard animals and to learn about where their food comes from and why that matters. We host volunteers from the community as well as corporate groups and provide team-building experiences. Also a unique training, workshop, meeting and launch venue.

Can you believe Clover is 26 years old?! 🥹

Clover the donkey is our oldest resident, she spends her days in the field with Ash (our 3 year old donkey) 🥰

As she’s gotten older, Clover was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease - a pituitary gland disorder, common in older equines 🫏
There’s no cure, but with her daily medication, a special diet, and lots of cuddles, she is able to live a happy and comfortable life! 🫶

We’ve added some of the supplies we use for Clover’s care to our Amazon wishlist (linked in bio) along with other essentials for the farm animals 🚜 If you ever choose to donate something, send us a message and we’d love to show you the animals enjoying your gift 💝

MEET PENNY! 🥹🐷

She is our newest pig on loan and is expecting piglets in a few weeks time!🥳

She has settled into the farm perfectly - she’s really friendly and loves a tummy rub from our staff 🥰

DID YOU KNOW?! 🐖
Pigs are pregnant for 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days! 💗
Farrowing (the birthing process) lasts around 3-8 hours and piglets are usually born around 20 minutes apart 🐽

We are so excited to meet her little piglets and we hope you are too! 🥳

FOLLOW to be the first to know when her babies have arrived!! 💌

We work with an Open women’s prison that has a working outdoor farm attached.
The incarcerated people are taught animal skills such as pig keeping and rearing at the end of their sentence.
All our pigs are on loan from this Farm. Pregnant sows stay with us and give birth before going back to wean their piglets at 8 weeks old.
The Prison Farm is passionate about high welfare standards which perfectly aligns with our values here.
We keep pigs at our farm as a learning resource so children, young adults and students gain essential animal husbandry experience to work in the industry.
It can be hard for children in London to access and learn about animals and so we hope to help educate. 💚

MOONBEAM GAVE BIRTH!! WE NEED NAME IDEAS 🥹

First-time mum Moonbeam has given birth to an adorable baby girl! Moonbeam and her daughter are both doing really well! They’ve been enjoying the sun by spending their days out in the field with all the other ewes and lambs! 🥰

Moonbeam was our final mum-to-be so her little lamb means lambing season has officially ended at the farm! 💗
☀️ In the UK, most lambs are born in March-April when conditions are most optimal:
🐑 Fresh, nutrient-rich grass
🐑 Milder temperatures
🐑 Longer daylight hours
🐑 Higher survival rates
🐑 Natural breeding cycle

We recently got some new chickens at the farm and a cockerel too! They are now integrated with all our other hens and you can come and see them out on the yard or in their pen! 🥰

NEW BABY ALERT!! 🥹

Our first-time mum Waffle (slide 2) gave birth to an adorable little boy! 🥳

He spent his Saturday sunbathing in the field with our other ewes and their babies and he was loving it! ☀️🥰

His mum is a Blue faced Leicester and she was in lamb to a Border Leicester Ram so he is a cross bred - a mix of the two breeds! 💚

The fields (and the indoor pens 👀) are getting pretty busy with all of our new arrivals! Have you come to welcome them to the farm yet? 🤗

MEET BUNNY!! 🥹

Muffin has given birth to the most adorable baby girl! She is a first-time mum and she is thriving!! 🥰

Muffin is a Blue faced Leicester and she was in lamb to a Border Leicester ram! This pairing explains baby Bunny’s ears! 🤩

SWIPE! In the videos, you can see Muffin licking her newborn lamb! This is super important as it helps with:
🐑 Bonding - helps the ewe recognise her lamb by scent
🐑 Stimulates breathing
🐑 Boosts lambs circulation and encourages the baby to stand up
🐑 Keeps them warm - dries their coat to stop them losing body heat
🐑 Cleaning instinct - removes birth fluids so reduces scent for predators in the wild

We were on ITV!! 🤩

A couple of weeks ago came to visit the farm! 🥰
Our Farm Manager Chris showed Sally round and she met our goats, donkeys, piglets and chickens! Since the filming, our lambing season has begun so we have lambs now too! 🥹
