🔬 We recently held our RVC Bio Bridge Challenge, a careers competition for our Bioscience students, sponsored by the London BioScience Innovation Centre. Teams were made up of mixed year groups, with students in years 2, 3 and 4 participating to solve a Bioscience problem. Each team then presented their solution to RVC judges, Associate Prof Claire Russell & Dr Beth Preston. The head of Biosciences Dr Caroline Pellet-Many and Dr Matt Gage, head of Y3 Biosciences, were also present at the event.

Lauren Smith and Prof Alex Seifalian attended from LBIC, with Lauren presenting the winning team's prize certificate and Dr Seifalian drawing the 10 raffle prizes for The Francis Crick lab tour.

The team that won the competition was the "Live, Love, Livestock" team - Sonya Kotlchev, Katie Morton, Charlotte Stooke, Beatrice Roberts, Evelyn Scott, Sheyda Khan and Shahana Francis.

The 10 lucky Crick Tour winners are: Georgina Rose, Sabina Patrzalek, Jessica Leigh, Shahana Francis, Maciej Cejrowski, William Luckhurst, Mary Tanousis, Sheyda Khan, Jenna Smith and Evelyn Scott

Also in attendance were guest RVC alumni who mentored the teams throughout the challenge - Alexandra Ash, Behavioural Ecologist, Michelle Tang, Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Roisin Edgar, Animal Rescue Officer at the RSPCA, Alice Pollard, BBSRC Discovery Fellow at Imperial College London. Andrew Mead is an alumnus and RVC lecturer. Andrew helped to devise the question to be researched. The groups battled it out against the clock to come up with viable responses to the brief. All teams performed excellently.

🪴 Growing something wonderful at RVC!

This year, the RVC has transformed an unused space into a welcoming allotment for staff and students to enjoy. In true sustainability spirit, a fallen tree that was causing issues in an equine field was given a new lease of life, chipped and used to create the base for the allotment. Unloved trugs have also found a new home, with students now able to adopt one and grow their own produce. The allotment is becoming much more than a place to grow plants – it’s a peaceful spot to escape the stresses of work and study, enjoy some fresh air, and bring people together for a chat and a bit of gardening. Best of all, some of the produce grown is being used in our kitchens! It’s a lovely example of how reusing what we already have can create something positive for our community, our wellbeing and the environment.

🔬 Graham Hewson has been appointed as Chief Business Officer of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and Chief Executive Officer of the London Bioscience Innovation Centre (LBIC).

The Chief Business Officer role at the RVC has been created to strengthen the RVC’s commercial impact by helping to take the RVC’s research into industry and supporting the growth of bioscience businesses that draw on its facilities and expertise. There are many synergies between this role and that of the Chief Executive Officer at LBIC, whose role is to significantly build and support the life sciences innovation ecosystem within its estate and far beyond.

🗓️ Applications to undertake a PhD through the London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme (LIDo) launched on the 1st of October.

This is a wonderful opportunity to undertake fully funded PhD training and research at the Royal Veterinary College, in partnership with one of seven other leading London universities.

🧫 A UK-wide network, co-led by the RVC, has secured a share of £54 million of joint UK government and UKRI investment to turn priorities identified by the agrifood sector into practical action on antimicrobial resistance. This funding marks the beginning of a new programme which will help farmers and veterinarians collect and use antibiotic-use data, strengthening how use is understood and progress benchmarked, as well as supporting better decision-making on farms.
