Especially if you have a dog who likes to chase, it’s important to be able to tell them - no you can’t chase that

✨Weekly demo✨

A super practical one if you love taking your dog out and about - “Tuck”!

I love this cue because it helps me get Luna safely out of the way in cafés, restaurants, on public transport, and in other busy spaces.

You don’t have to teach a back-up for this, but I do think it helps make the movement much smoother if your dog already knows how to take a few steps backwards.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

Don’t know how to teach back up? Let me know and I can do a demo on it!

I found this out the hard way. Only teaching your dog to look you in the eyes actually makes other obedience so much harder! We ended up having to un-do a lot of stuff just to get a basic ‘watch’
Do you think you’ve done the same?

Yes or no?

This happens to me literally almost every day at the moment. The rise in off-lead dogs on the pavement is wild. Imagine if my dog was aggressive — how different that first video would have looked 👀 There seem to be so many dog trainers who glamorise off-lead on the pavement, and maybe their dogs are under control, but glamorising it means that other people try and do it too, and that’s why we have a big issue right now!

Dogs should be on the lead on the pavement and under control. If you want your dog off lead, teach it recall and go to the park!

✨Fun scent work game to entertain your dog inside when it’s too hot to be running around ✨

There are so many different scent work games you can do, but a lot of them involve your dog moving around the house or searching an area. If it’s super hot, though, you might not want your dog running around too much, so this is another version that’s really fun and doesn’t require much movement .

The aim is for your dog to indicate the correct scent box. I used mint tea in one of mine, but you can use anything safe that’s nice and smelly. You’ll just need a few boxes.

I started by teaching Luna the indication. I literally just put the scent box down and shaped the behaviour, she’s very good at free shaping, so the second she touched it with her nose I marked “yes”, and pretty quickly she realised that putting her nose on the box was what I wanted.

Even just teaching them how to work out what you want is a really fun exercise in itself.

Once they understand the indication, you can add more scent boxes and make it harder. This was actually only the second time I’ve done this with Luna. She doesn’t usually enjoy traditional scent work where she has to search for things, but I realised yesterday when sending videos to a client that she enjoyed this version a lot more when she could just lie down and indicate the right one.

I thought that was a really nice example of how even dogs you don’t think will enjoy scent work might enjoy a variation of the game. And I’m often asked to show videos of dogs who don’t immediately understand what to do, so I thought this was a good example!

How many times have you been told to “be more exciting than the environment”?

But when you have a high prey drive, low food drive dog, that advice starts to fall apart.

Suddenly you’re faced with prey and nothing works.
No high value treat. No ball. No games. No excited voice.

What if I told you you don’t need to be more exciting than the environment…
and you also don’t need to suppress your dog?

Comment “PART 2” and I’ll break down my 3 top tips for starting to rebuild control again around prey.

Prey drive;
If you want control you need to stop trying to suppress their prey drive, and learn to work with it.

Can you guess why it changes how you train it?
