🩺❤️ Why Regular “MOT” Health Checks Matter

Just like us, our pets’ healthcare needs can change as they get older. That’s why regular senior health checks are so important — even when they seem perfectly well! 🐶🐱

Our pets are experts at hiding signs of pain and illness, and sometimes the earliest changes can be subtle. A routine “MOT” gives your veterinary team the opportunity to spot potential problems before they become more serious. 👀🩺

During a senior health check, your vet may assess:

❤️ Heart & circulation — listening for changes such as heart murmurs.

🦷 Teeth & gums — checking for dental disease and discomfort.

⚖️ Weight & body condition — monitoring for weight gain or unexplained weight loss.

🦴 Joints & mobility — looking for stiffness, pain or changes in movement.

👀 Eyes & ears — checking for age-related changes.

🐾 Skin & coat — looking for lumps, bumps or other changes.

🩺 Blood pressure & blood tests — depending on your pet’s age, history and clinical findings, these can help identify conditions that may not yet be causing obvious symptoms.

💧 Drinking & toileting habits — changes can sometimes provide important clues about underlying health problems.

And perhaps most importantly, a senior check gives you the chance to talk about any changes you’ve noticed at home, however small they may seem.

⚖️🦷 Weight Management & Dental Health in Senior Pets

As our dogs and cats get older, keeping them at a healthy weight and looking after their teeth and gums becomes even more important. ❤️

🐾 ⚖️ A healthy weight = happier movement

Senior pets can naturally become less active as they age, which means they may gain weight more easily. Even a small amount of extra weight can put additional strain on their joints and make mobility more difficult — especially for pets already experiencing stiffness or arthritis.

Keeping your senior pet at an appropriate body condition can help them stay mobile, comfortable and active for longer. 🐶🐱

Things to consider:
✨ Measure their food rather than guessing portions
✨ Be mindful of treats and table scraps
✨ Encourage gentle, age-appropriate exercise
✨ Monitor their weight and body condition regularly
✨ Speak to your vet if you notice unexplained weight gain or loss

🦷 Don’t forget those pearly whites!

Dental disease is extremely common in older pets and can cause significant discomfort. Signs to look out for include:

🦷 Bad breath
🦷 Red, swollen or bleeding gums
🦷 Build-up of tartar
🦷 Difficulty chewing or dropping food
🦷 Pawing at the mouth
🦷 Changes in appetite
🦷 Facial swelling

And remember — pets are very good at hiding pain, so they may still eat normally even when their mouth is uncomfortable.

🐾 PET SENIOR MONTH — DAY 2! 🐾

🐶🐱 Recognising the Signs of Ageing in Our Pets

As our pets enter their golden years, changes can happen gradually — and sometimes they’re so subtle that we don’t notice them at first. ❤️

Ageing is a natural part of life, but “just getting old” shouldn’t mean your pet has to live with discomfort or reduced quality of life.

Here are some signs to keep an eye out for in your senior dog or cat:

🐾 Changes in mobility — taking longer to get up, stiffness, struggling with stairs or jumping onto furniture.

💤 Sleeping more — while senior pets naturally rest more, a noticeable change in energy levels is worth keeping an eye on.

🍽️ Changes in appetite or weight — eating more or less than usual, losing weight or gaining weight without an obvious reason.

💧 Drinking or urinating more — increased thirst or needing the toilet more frequently can be an important sign of underlying illness.

🦷 Dental changes — bad breath, difficulty eating, dropping food or pawing at the mouth can all indicate dental discomfort.

🧠 Changes in behaviour — becoming more withdrawn, restless, anxious, vocal or confused can sometimes be associated with ageing or an underlying medical condition.

👀 Changes to their eyes or senses — bumping into things, struggling to see in dim light or not responding as they normally would.

🧼 Changes in grooming — particularly in cats. A coat that becomes matted, greasy or unkempt can be a sign that they’re struggling to groom themselves.

❤️ The most important thing? Know what is normal for YOUR pet.

You know your pet better than anyone, so noticing small changes in their everyday behaviour can be incredibly valuable.

If you notice something different, don’t simply put it down to old age. 🩺 A veterinary check-up can help identify problems early and make sure your pet is comfortable and enjoying their golden years.

🐾 Meet Ace! 🐾 🐈 😺

Ace was with us today for some X-rays after developing a cough. 🩺🐱

He was such a good boy throughout his visit, and handled everything like a little superstar! ⭐ We’re hoping the X-rays help us get to the bottom of his coughing and make sure Ace is feeling back to his best soon. ❤️

🐾✨ Meet Mochi! ✨🐾

Sweet little Mochi came to VetCall today for her spay 🩷✂️

She was such a lovely patient and did brilliantly with our team. Spaying is an important procedure that not only prevents unwanted pregnancies, but also helps protect against certain reproductive diseases later in life. 🐱💕

Now it’s time for plenty of rest, cuddles and TLC while Mochi recovers at home! 🥰
