It's a commonly held belief that leaving water on your horse after hosing them off will increase their temperature because the water will cook and heat your horse up. However, this is a myth.
Leaving water on your horse increases evaporation time which will in turn continue to help cool your horse in hot weather.
Given the incredibly hot weather this summer it's very important to make sure you're using best practices that use the most up-to-date research.
Soak your horse and don't scrape it off

a few months ago I posted a video showing the positive reinforcement starting blocks for training a horse to accept the fly spray. here you can see the culmination of those efforts in our mini Shetland yearling as he stands perfectly still out in the paddock loose to accept fly spray all over his body including his ears and face. if you are experiencing difficulties with fly spray for any horse of any age or size you can contact me at Click Clop - Equine Behaviour and we can create a training plan to resolve the issue

*I tried recording this several times without crying so I apologise for the audio quality*
On the 5th of June we said goodbye to our family dog Skye. When we got her as a puppy back in 2014 she was a chaos gremlin, chewing everything, getting under the sofa, trying to herd us. But she grew up into the most wonderful and well mannered dog. Could she sit? Sometimes. Could she recall? If she was in the mood to. Did she chase cars and pull on the lead? Like it was her job. But she was the best dog we could ever have asked for.

She never featured in any of my videos because I mostly began posting after had moved out and she stayed living with my parents. But it's important to me that her memory is kept alive on my page, so I'll be posting some videos of her and probably taking a break from my normal horsey content to grieve.

Fun Fact
horse's sweat contains a protein called Latherin which acts like a soap and lathers up when agitated to aid in cooling the horse down while minimising water loss. This is why you will see a white soapy substance come off your horse when you hose off a hot horse

Did you know that horses are colourblind? Horses have two cone receptors as opposed to humans typical 3. They can see the blue and yellow spectrum in slightly more muted colours. This makes identifying red difficult for them.

Enrichment doesn't have to be fancy or flashy, all I had available for some unexpected box rest was a bunch of celery so I've tucked stalks into a leadrope and his haynet along with scattering some treats in the hay and on the floor to encourage a low head position too. While he stays in I'll post some other simple enrichment to keep him entertained until he's all better

Day 4 of Strangles Awareness Week
Keeping a good record of your horses temperature allows for quick recognition of infection as fever is often the first sign. Horses can find temperature taking stressful and uncomfortable so regular handling and training cooperatively can help reduce this.

Following on from yesterday's talk about isolation, here are some very simple DIY enrichment ideas that are low cost for occupying some of your horse's day during quarantine.

Some other ideas not mentioned:
- Forage bar, bring herbs and other plants into a bucket or hanging ball
- Water buffet, having additional water options with tea or herbs
- Sound, radio or wind chimes. Make sure to check your horse is happy with the sound periodically or train them to turn the radio on and off
- Different height presentations, some items hanging high, some middle, some low to allow for browzing and grazing behaviour
