When Anna taught me to groom, the first thing she made me understand was this:

The groom doesn’t start with the scissors or clippers.

Before anything else I learned quickly how important the wash, the blow dry, the brush, the comb really were. Every step done properly, in order, without rushing. She was firm about it from day one and I didn’t fully understand why until I watched what happened when it was done right.

The coat sat differently. The clippers and scissors moved differently. The finish was cleaner, more precise, more even. The dog was calmer.

Everything that came before the cut had made everything so much easier.

We still teach it exactly this way at Dog World. Because every time we’ve seen it done properly, the result speaks for itself.

Skip the prep and you’ll feel it the moment you start cutting. The coat drags. The finish is uneven. The dog is uncomfortable.

Do it properly and the scissors almost do the work themselves.

Swipe to see why each step matters, and the pro tips that make the difference. 🐾

Last week a fellow groomer in our local community reached out.

She had this pup on her table, he was severely matted, very jumpy and scared. She was alone and knew she couldn’t safely finish the groom.

She asked if we could help. We said yes.

It took both of us to safely shave his entire coat down very very short. We found grass seeds in his armpits and between his toes.

After we finished we encouraged the owner back to her regular groomer with clear instructions to book consistently so he never has to go through this again.

He was so sweet at the end. Relieved. Finally comfortable.

This is what the grooming community can look like when we choose collaboration over competition. You cannot do this job alone. The groomers around you are not your competition. They’re your village.

This is us. Before every groom we take time to just… be with the dogs.

On their level. At their pace. No rushing to the table. No straight to the scissors. Just a moment to let them settle, feel safe, and decide we’re alright.

It’s not a technique. It’s a value.

And it’s the difference between a dog who tolerates being groomed and a dog who trusts it.

In this heat, your dog’s coat isn’t just about appearance.

It’s about comfort. Skin health. Temperature regulation. How they feel during a groom and long after they’ve left.

Wellness grooming isn’t a new idea, it’s just finally getting the name it deserves.

At Dog World we’ve always groomed this way. We check the skin before we reach for the scissors. We work with the coat, not against it. We pay attention to how a dog is feeling, not just how they’re looking.

Because a dog who feels good during a groom learns to trust it. And a dog who trusts it is easier to groom for the rest of their life.

From her first day to her last. 🩷🤍

This is Arianna’s journey at Dog World Grooming Academy.

She came in already running a successful dog sitting, walking and boarding business, and wanted to add grooming to everything she’d already built.

She leaves as a confident, capable groomer, ready to offer her clients something even more complete.

Watching someone grow like this never gets old. It’s the whole reason we built this place.

Congratulations Arianna, we’re so proud of you. The next chapter is going to be brilliant. 🐾

Bringing your puppy for their first groom? Here’s what actually matters.

It’s less about the haircut and more about the introduction. A short, calm, positive first visit builds trust that lasts for years. No rushing.

Just getting your puppy comfortable with the table, the sounds, the handling, the new space. A peaceful and safe experience matters more than a perfect cut. Because the goal isn’t just today’s groom. It’s every groom after this one.

If you’re a new puppy owner and not sure what to look for in a first groom, ask your groomer how they handle first visits. A good one will have a proper answer.

Nobody talks about this enough in dog grooming.

This job is very physical. Your back. Your shoulders. Your wrists. They take the strain every single day.

Most of us don’t think about it until something hurts.

And by then, the damage is already done.

Your table should be at the right height for your body, not the dog, not a general guide. You, specifically. If you’re bending or reaching to compensate, it will catch up with you.

Take breaks. Rotate dogs so you’re not in the same position for hours.

Invest in equipment that supports you as much as it supports the dog.

You cannot do this job well when you’re in pain. And you cannot build a long career if you burn your body out in the first few years.

We teach this from day one at Dog World Grooming Academy.

Because a great groomer is a groomer who can still do this in ten years.
