When Anna taught me to groom, the first thing she made me understand was this:
The groom doesn’t start with the scissors or clippers.
Before anything else I learned quickly how important the wash, the blow dry, the brush, the comb really were. Every step done properly, in order, without rushing. She was firm about it from day one and I didn’t fully understand why until I watched what happened when it was done right.
The coat sat differently. The clippers and scissors moved differently. The finish was cleaner, more precise, more even. The dog was calmer.
Everything that came before the cut had made everything so much easier.
We still teach it exactly this way at Dog World. Because every time we’ve seen it done properly, the result speaks for itself.
Skip the prep and you’ll feel it the moment you start cutting. The coat drags. The finish is uneven. The dog is uncomfortable.
Do it properly and the scissors almost do the work themselves.
