🩺🐾 World Zoonoses Day 2025 | July 6

Today, we recognize World Zoonoses Day - a powerful reminder of the critical role veterinarians play in protecting both animal and human health.

Zoonotic diseases - illnesses that pass from animals to humans - make up the majority of emerging infectious diseases. From rabies to avian influenza, veterinarians are often the first line of defense, working tirelessly on surveillance, prevention, education, and response.

This day commemorates Louis Pasteur’s first successful rabies vaccine in 1885 - a historic milestone that shaped modern veterinary and medical science.

To all fellow vets and colleagues in animal health:

🌍 You are public health professionals.
🤝 You are key players in the One Health movement.

The AVMA is committed to supporting veterinary technicians, who play crucial roles in caring for patients and making veterinary practices run smoothly and efficiently.

This   we're putting the spotlight on our Small Animal Referrals’ Cardiology Service.

Recently they utilised our new Vivid IQ echo machine to during the procedure to medically manage young dog Ella's heart failure and successfully discharge her.

With multiple teams involved, we can introduce a diverse approach to cardiac disease, offering tailored multidisciplinary care.

What can you do on to help control the spread of this preventable disease? The first thing is to keep your pets away from wildlife.

The second? Talk to your local veterinarian to ensure your animals' vaccinations are up-to-date. These are two of the biggest ways you can make a positive impact and protect the health of your animals. You can find more information at avma.org/Rabies.

Kabuğun içindeki kemiklerin, örneğin pelvisin ayırt edilememesi ve arka bacakların gerisindeki kabuğun yarı saydam olması, her ikisi de kemik kaybının göstergesidir. Kaplumbağalar, takviye kalsiyum içeren iyi dengelenmiş bir diyetle beslenmelidir, peletler genellikle yeşilliklerden daha iyi dengelenmiştir, meyveler ise önerilmez.

Calcium deficiency is all too common in captive tortoises.  Notice how the bones within the shell, such as the pelvis, is not discernible, and the shell behind the rear legs is translucent, both indicators of extreme bone loss. Tortoises should be fed a well balanced diet with supplemental calcium, pellets are often much better balanced than greens, fruits are not recommended at all.

Alopecia X (AX) is a hereditary condition which primarily affects Pomeranians and causes truncal alopecia and skin hyperpigmentation. Alaskan Malamute, Chow-Cow, Keeshond, Norwegian Elkhound and Samoyed breeds also show more susceptibility to the disease.
