It’s RVN Amy’s last day with us at Whisker & Woof, and we’d like to extend a huge thank you to her for all her hard work over the last six months. She bought her canine behaviour focus to the practice, and was instrumental in Whisker & Woof obtaining Dog’s Trust Dog Friendly Practice accreditation. This is an award we are extremely proud to have. We wish Amy all the very best in the next chapter of her RVN career! 🐶👩‍⚕️☺️

Ear cytology (microscopic exam of ear discharge) is so important in aiding diagnosis and establishing the correct treatment plan for our patients with ear disease. Here we can see rod-type bacteria and white blood cells confirming a bacterial infection. As this class of bacteria can be potentially difficult to treat, a swab to establish antibiotic sensitivity is indicated. 👂🏼 🐶 💊 👏🏼

*Warning graphic images* Poor Captain, sustained this lip entrapment injury which had to be managed surgically. The lip was thickened, painful and infected and simply replacing the lip back over the penetrating tooth was not sufficient to solve the problem. After starting antibiotics, a second procedure was required to perform a two-layer closure of the lip tissue with a successful outcome for the patient. Well done Captain! 🧑‍✈️ 🫡 🐱

Poor Dougal was admitted with vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite. We were able to diagnose a stone foreign body in the small intestine, and Dougal was taken to theatre. The stone was removed, and his swollen stomach decompressed (grass and liquid). Fortunately, Dougal has made a swift and complete recovery from his surgery, and he’s back on his walks with his owners! 🪨🩻🐶😀

Colour dilution alopecia in dogs is a genetic skin condition that causes hair loss and dry flaky skin in patients with dilute coat colours such as blue or fawn. Afflicted dogs are more prone to skin infections and skin irritation. Whilst there is no cure, fatty acid supplementation and topical shampoo therapy can be of great benefit to improve coat quality and reduce the risk of secondary infections. 🔬🤓🧽

*Warning graphic image* Tooth root resorption in a cat! A very common and painful problem for our feline friends. This was only picked-up on dental x-ray (the crown looked normal), the picture shows a surgical gum flap exposing the base of the tooth. Look how the root has taken on a glass-like appearance during the resorptive process. Treatment is crown amputation, leaving the root behind. If your cat hasn’t had a dental exam in a while, please reach out to us to find out more about feline dental health. 🐈 🦷 😀

We now offer a new service at Whisker & Woof: veterinary acupuncture 🐾. Acupuncture is a gentle, complementary therapy that can help manage chronic pain and support mobility in pets with musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis. Carried out on our premises by Carolyn Smith MRCVS, of London Veterinary Acupuncture, she will visit on Tuesday afternoons to provide this treatment.
