We asked our staff what their experience was volunteering. Here's what they had to say:

Glyn, Head Zoo Keeper: "I started out my zoo career as a volunteer, during that time I gained invaluable experience and confidence. All of which helped me establish my career as a zookeeper."

Alice, Zoo Keeper: "Volunteering gave me the opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills, and to travel the world to learn how to take care of various animals! I definitely recommend getting out there and giving it a try if you're considering it"

Unlike the pigeons we see every day in London, the speckled pigeon is a distinctive species native to parts of Africa, and is one of the zoo’s more unusual feathered residents.

With its striking spotted neck and rosy tones, it stands out from the familiar grey city birds we’re used to spotting on the street. The pigeons we see here in London (actually called rock doves) are super adaptable and thrive in busy city life, scavenging on a variety of foods. Speckled pigeons, while also resilient, are more commonly found in open landscapes and towns across Africa, where they forage on seeds and grains.

Next time you visit, stop by and take a closer look at this beautifully marked bird 🐦💛
