I found this old video tonight and it stopped me cold.

Paris. Saturday night. Outside the Moulin Rouge.

I’m waiting at the crossing with Toby and Whisky on lead. Toby was still heavily leash-reactive then, so this was hardly a serene environment: traffic, noise, bodies everywhere, everybody poised to move.

The signal changes.

The crowd surges forward.

And we don’t.

I don’t remember making a decision. There’s no visible hesitation, no wrestling with myself. We simply stay where we are.

A few seconds pass.

The crowd clears.

Then we walk.

Composed. Unhurried. Almost absurdly calm considering where we are.

I watched it several times tonight before I understood why it had affected me.

I was watching an earlier version of myself practise something I wouldn’t have had the language for then.

Grace.

There was permission to move, and still I waited until it was right for us to move.

No obedience to the crowd.
No manufactured urgency.
No assumption that because everyone else was going, I should go too.

Some part of me already understood that a signal is information, not a command.

And perhaps that is what discernment looks like before we learn to call it discernment.

Knowing that an opening does not make something yours.

Knowing that availability is not invitation.

Knowing that other people moving does not mean it is time for you to move.

There is something strangely moving about discovering that you once possessed wisdom you thought you had only recently acquired.

Maybe we spend less of our lives becoming ourselves than we think.

Maybe some of it is simply learning the names of things we already knew.

I only want what wants me.
