It’s not all about nibbling your forearm and ignoring you on walks.

This was the most difficult breed to dissect so far.
Not because Shibas are complicated, but because there isn’t one Shiba.

There are a hundred variations of the same idea: an independent, self-employed dog with very strong opinions about your expectations.

Some are social.
Some are… tolerant.
Some recall beautifully.
Some see a squirrel and enter another dimension.

What stays consistent isn’t the behaviour.
It’s the framework:

→ autonomy over compliance
→ selective engagement
→ reinforcement that makes sense to them

If you stop trying to make them a different breed, they suddenly become a very easy dog to live with.

If you don’t…you’ll be negotiating with a professional boundary tester.

Which one do you have? 👀

I recently came across a wonderful post by .barbos about how WE, as a generation, have changed the way we raise and care for our dogs.

It resonated so much that I simply couldn’t scroll past.

Thank you .barbos for allowing me to translate and share this post 🤍

German Shepherd:
The ultimate best friend… or a noble shark?

Both.

This is a cooperative working breed with serious engine power. When their needs are met — structure, clarity, purpose — they are deeply loyal, intuitive, almost telepathic with their person.

When under-stimulated, over-aroused or insecure?

Shark phase (especially as puppies) isn’t pathology, it’s drive with nowhere to go.

A confident GSD is thoughtful, responsive and stable.
An overwhelmed GSD is reactive, mouthy and misunderstood.

Meet the need, and you get one of the most devoted partners you’ll ever know.

French Bulldogs are often underestimated.

They’re muscular, people-oriented, easy to please and frequently misunderstood.

Bred for companionship, closeness, and human connection, not independence, endurance, or “working dog” lifestyles.

When we judge a dog without understanding why they were built the way they are, we miss the point entirely.

Different design.
Different needs.
Same respect.

From “the world is too much”
to confident, curious, thriving dog 🖤

Nala came into her family later than ideal, with very little early socialisation, and busy London life felt… loud, fast, and overwhelming. Walking was hard. Coping was hard.

What changed wasn’t Nala.
It was the support around her.

Her humans slowed down, listened, adjusted expectations, and committed to helping her feel safe, even when progress wasn’t linear.

And Nala?
She showed us exactly how much resilience she had once the pressure lifted.

This review means the world to me, but the real credit goes to:
✨ a dog who kept trying
✨ owners who truly heard her
✨ and a process built on patience, not force

So proud of you, Nala. And so grateful for your people!

• Sociality: Dogs > Humans
• Interests: Running. More running. Escaping. Existential freedom.
• Quirks: Avid singer, zero shame

Not stubborn. Not dominant.
Just built different.

Fetch isn’t evil — it’s just wildly misunderstood.

If you want a healthier version of the game, here are the rules I teach:

• Search for the ball first.
Sniffing grounds the dog, lowers arousal and makes the whole activity actually enriching.

• Precision over chaos.
The ball gets thrown again only when your dog places it in your hand (gradually, not on day one).
This turns fetch into a thinking game, not a sprinting meltdown.

• Teach disengagement, not obsession.
Your dog should be able to walk away from the ball.
If they can’t, you don’t have a game — you have a fixation.

• Throw it nearby, not across the universe.
Short throws protect joints, reduce chasing highs, and keep your dog functional after the game instead of feral.

• Use the ball to teach “drop.”
Balls bounce. They’re FUN.
That makes letting go hard — which is exactly why it’s the perfect training tool for impulse control.

Fetch can be great when used with structure and limits.
Without those? It’s just cardio for anxiety.
