According to his human Mia, Rex had never stopped to sniff a tree at the park. Three weeks after BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) surgery with our St. John’s Wood team, she says he can’t stop 💜

Mia described how BOAS - a condition that affects many flat-faced breeds and can significantly impact a dog’s quality of life - had left Rex breathless after just five minutes of walking and unable to explore like other dogs. BOAS means a dog’s airways are too narrow and too cramped to breathe properly - every breath is hard work, and it only gets worse over time.

Like lots of pet parents, Mia had been nervous about surgery. But seeing the change in him now, she says, has been absolutely incredible. Dr Penny widened Rex’s nostrils to allow air to flow, trimmed the excess tissue at the back of his throat that had been partially blocking every breath, and removed two small pouches that had formed from years of laboured breathing - so that for the first time in his life, breathing isn’t a constant struggle.

We’re so glad Rex is living a better life, and we’re here to help make that possible for others too. So if you have any concerns about your dog’s breathing, please don’t hesitate to get them checked. It can make all the difference.

Baxter’s story 🐾

We first met Baxter, a 1 year old rescue, just days after he’d arrived at his new home (his fifth home, in fact!). He was nervous to start with, but with lots of patience and encouragement, his confidence only grew.

Then one day, he was suddenly rushed in as an emergency after being hit by a van. He suffered severe degloving injuries (a very serious type of wound where the skin and tissue is stripped away), multiple burns and a bulging eye. Sadly, he was also in shock and unable to walk. Vet Marie, together with nurses Erin and Steph, stabilised Baxter and got him straight into surgery. He was fairly unstable for the rest of the day, needing intensive monitoring by the team.

But over the following weeks, with regular bandage changes and plenty of fuss, we’re so pleased to say Baxter made a full recovery! Today, he’s back to his happy self and still greets us with a wagging tail every time we see him.

We couldn’t be more proud of Baxter for being such a brave boy, and a huge thank you to Marie, Erin, Steph and the whole Balham team for all of their hard work and care.

It’s Vet Receptionist Week, and we couldn’t let it pass without shouting out our incredible hosts and Virtual Care team!

They’re the first faces you see, the reassuring voices on the end of the phone, and the ones making sure every pet and their human feels welcome from the moment they arrive. Although your furry friend might simply know them as the treat people.

We honestly couldn’t do what we do without them. Thank you for everything 💜
