Our vet teams go the extra mile for every patient, but every now and then a case comes along that really shows just how far that extends…
Kenco, a 7-week-old puppy, was brought into our St. Albans clinic after becoming lethargic, refusing food and water, and vomiting. A scan (thanks to Dr Rebecca, who came in on her afternoon off to help) revealed something much more serious than an upset tummy. This tiny puppy had a gastrointestinal obstruction, and needed surgery urgently.
The team got to work to stabilise Kenco right away - with blood tests, IV fluids, pain relief and imaging, all to get answers as fast as possible. Dr Charlotte also gave up her day off to carry out emergency surgery. Everyone chipped in - from our nurses to our Patient Care Assistant, right down to our vet student - all staying late through the night to help. A big shout out to Hannah, Flo and Imogen!
In surgery, they found the culprit - a large hair scrunchie, caught in the small intestine. It was removed just in time, before any lasting damage could be done.
Dr Charlotte took Kenco home overnight to make sure she’d be continuously monitored, with a special mention going to her son, who helped check Kenco’s temperature and heart rate through the night.
By the next morning, Kenco behaved as though nothing had happened (of course!).
